Going to Work: What to do with Yorkie? I've been a stay-at-home mom for 22 years and recently got a job that will start in June. Our Yorkie is a year and 8 months old. When I have to leave the house, he goes into his crate (he loves it). But if I'm going to be gone all day, I don't want to crate him that long. He is housetrained to potty outside -- no pee pads. Should I put him in a small room, like the laundry room, and gate the doorway, leaving a pee pad on the floor when I start work? I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to confuse him, but I also don't want to crate him for 8-9 hours at a time without access to food and water and a potty break. |
My baby is only 5 months (almost), and I leave her in the kitchen, on ceramic tile floor, w/her bed @ one end, and food and water at the other...It's a fairly small kitchen, and she has two puddle pads, about in the middle...I think an area large enough to spread out their food/toys/puddle pads is better than a crate all day, unless someone can come in to let her out...which I know is no easy task...Good luck w/your new job, and I hope you find a resolution that works for you and your little one... I think you should buy a baby gate and gate him in a area you feel safe he will be in walk him about 15 minutes outside in the morning before u leave and place his food and water bowl in the little are you keep him with his bed leave on the radio or tv to keep him company i do this for my bingo but when i leave bingo has the window to see people pass the window he loves it i hope this works... you can expect him to be angry and rip up things or pee in doors which he shouldnt do but u need to have patience and he will eventually learn hope this helps |
we bought an xpen for the furbabies to use while we are away at work or school, I like the fact that it's bigger than a crate and they have room to plan and move around. |
I work about six hours, usually it ends up being more around seven or eight, and I live Baxter in my bathroom. I don't lay a pee pad down, he has his food and water, his crate, his favorite pillow and blanket, chew toys, and some other toys with him. So far, he has not peed or pooped in that bathroom the whole time I'm gone, and he is only five months. Four months when I was leaving him alone. If you're pup is over the age of 12 months, then he should be able to hold it for 12 hours. At least, that is what I have heard, however months old your baby is, then that is how long they should be able to hold their pee. :animal36 |
Hello, maybe there´s a possibility that a good neighbour or an older child in the neighbourhood can go with him outside while you are working? I would prefer this more than a pee pad and your dog is not so long alone. Formerly I had 3 chihuahuas and two childs from my neighbourhood daily come after school for going walking with my chi´s and I gave them monthly an amount of money for that. Today I can take my two biewers with me if I work. kindly greetings! |
A babygate is definitely a good idea. I have 2 babies at home, my 7 months old Yorkie and my almost 3 months old Maltese. We keep both of them in our kitchen and hallway area blocked off by a babygate. We put 2 pee pads down on opposite sides of the area, food, water, toys, and their beds are in there with them. My fiance' is usually home within 6-8 hours after I have left to go to work. Even though they have each other, they still cry and whine for a little while as I leave(fiance' leaves for work before me). By the time he gets home, they are usually playing or cuddled up together. We only have to do this 4 days out of the week. I would defintely get a babygate, and you can also just leave the crate in the room with the door open so he has that option of going in there to rest if he wants. |
I leave my puppy in a large kennel while I am out, and Pet Mate kennels come iwth a small food and water container that you hook on the door. Sadie Belle loves it! Also, I put a towel, then puppy pad down and throw in her favorite toy! |
work We leave Bella in the living room and kitchen. She potties outside. She does fine all day. She does not get into anything. She sleeps in her bed and plays with her toys. I leave the tv on the music channel all day so it is not too quite and lonely. |

My wife and I work shifts.. we try to take ours out for a good walk or 2 prior to going to work. Then we lock them in the bathroom with lots of water and some pee pads. They do really well. Give them a toy or two and a blanket. That way if there is an accident it is easy cleanup as it is on the bathroom. If we are gone more than 8 hrs I usually get my folks to let them out for a pee break.... hope this helps tx Jim |
I have had pocket for about a month, he is 4 months old. I leave him in a Ex-pen for about three to three and a half hours,with food and water and his toys until I get home for lunch and take him outside. He is very good and does not use the bathroom inside the Ex-pen. He is then left for about two and a half to three hours until I get home in the afternoon and he does fine. I give him a treat when I get home each time telling him he is a good boy. I am new to this also but I think the older he gets the longer he could hold it. The above suggestions sound like good one also. What ever works for you. |
I live in a gated home. About 3 baby gates. Mine are confined to my den while I work. |
