trying to be an informed buyer this is my first time buying a dog and i want to make sure i do it "right" ive been talking to a breeder and plan to see her dogs this weekend. she has two males. one she said will be 4lbs the other about 5lbs. she sells "her boys that size" for $1,700. does that seem right? i tried to compare to what others were charging and it varies so much! also, what exactly should i expect that to include? the first round of shots? anything else? sorry if these are stupid questions, theres just so much info out there and its getting confusing and overwhelming!! thanks for your help! |
Welcome to YT..glad to have you here...depending on your area is how prices are really determined...but for $1700 that is a bit steep unless there are tons of CH in the line...jmo! make sure you are able to see the parents...the kennel...other dogs in the area....if the breeder refuse to let you come to her home to see the puppies and parents i would walk the other way! |

thank you for your help. i spoke with another breeder and she sold her dogs for $2,000 but for breeding. and this new lady doesnt allow that. (not that i would breed the dog!) i wont a good healthy dog but im looking for "pet quality" i dont care if hes a "perfect" yorkie .. just that its a happy healthy pup! |
Hi there and Welcome to YT . I know how exciting it is to be looking for a Yorkie puppy :) Take your time though. I believe 1,700 is high though. What are you getting for that amount? AKC Reg? Show Dog? Ask these questions, and also request to see the parents and the whole litter. Make sure the breeder is selling at the propper age . Any younger then 12 weeks is not good. |

thank you!! what are the benefits of a dog being akc registered? again, sorry if these are dumb questions but searching for a pup was way more detailed than just not getting on at the pet store! shes selling them at 12 weeks. shes into showing her dogs .. so maybe im getting a "better" dog than i need. |
There is MANY thing to look for before the price of the dog when researching for a good breeder. It would help if you post her name or web site so some other Yorkie Talkers could share their own experience. Have you google her name? You might find some good/bad info! You should ask to see both parents and their living area if they aren't free in the house. You also want to see the warranty she have to offer. For the price, If they are registered it's ok, if not maybe a little high but not that bad. |

Her dog are Gorgeous! And the price is ok for Champions! Still make sure you see parents/kennel/nursery etc. Good luck in your search. |
Even more than the size , color, etc., I would ask questions related to the health of her line. Unfortunately, I purchased on emotion--it's hard when those sweet little faces tug at your heart. My Yorkies were plagued with common breed helath issues. Retinal dysplasia, liver shunt, heart valve problems, kidney failure. I would ask if any of her dogs --puppies have had these isssues. It is too easy to be caught up in the moment, so go with a list. Write down the answers to your questions. Ask the breeder to confim what she said and initial and date your list. It makes them think twice about telling the truth. |
If people can afford it, I always recommend they go to a YTCA breeder, this is the mother club of the AKC, and sets the standard. These breeders are show breeders, (not all show breeders are members), but they also believe in breeding healthy dogs, because they are developing a "line" and will not be in and out of the breeding business. They have the highest ethics, and are actually trying to improve the breed, and are not in the business of "selling dogs." A champion in the line means that the dog's relative met standard, and was an excellent example of the breed, and the offspring has a high chance of meeting standard if both parents were good examples of the breed. Not every champion produces champions, but there is a higher probability their offspring will indeed look like yorkies. Show breeder's prices are higher than non-show breeders' prices, but they actually make less, and many don't even break even because the cost of showing is very expensive. Showing is not a frivolous thing though; it's the way for others to judge your breeding stock, with an unemotional eye. As owners, we always think our dogs are perfect, but some should not be bred. Right now, there is a tremendous surplus of dogs, and only the best, conforming to standard, and healthiest should be breed. I think of it not so much as buying a dog, but showing monetary support for a breeder whose breeding program meets your approval. I'm not saying every member of the YTCA is perfect, but your odds of getting a healthy dog that looks, and acts like a yorkie are greatly increased. The really hard part of getting a dog from a YTCA member is proving that you will be a fit mother! :D I checked the YTCA list and Sheri L. Clark is a member, personally I think this is a great price. Here's the link: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club . So many people get dogs from byb's, and one leg surgery is more than that. I also recommend registering your dog with the AKC for many reasons, but mainly I believe in supporting the AKC because they are the only registry that does routine unannounced kennel inspections and this will help get rid of puppy mills. |
You mentioned that you just want a puppy as a pet. So, why then are you planning to pay for a show dog? I think that you know what you want and what you need, so why not keep looking and find a pet quality puppy. You end up paying less and then you can spend the money on the pup and buy loads of treats and toys :) Disclaimer: I am not saying, in any way, that a show dog isn't a great buy. I am sure that there are loads of people (myself included) that would love to have a dog with so many CHs in the bloodline, but I just figure that if you are not going to show, why pay the extra moola? |

that is a wonderful price for a yorkie from a show breeder :) i also think it is wonderful she is a member of the YTCA. i got bree (in my avatar) from a WONDERFUL show breeder her pedigree is full of champions (her sire is a CH and all 4 grandparents are CHs). she is gorgeous now and i can tell she is going to be a real beauty when she is all grown up. she is such a sweet baby and she is worth every penny i paid for her (and there were a lot of pennies :D lol) |
First, let me say welcome to YT!!! I think you are well on your way to being a responsible pet owner and informed buyer. You were smart enough to get on the web and do some research and thats how you ended up here, right? Tons of info in these forums...take your time and read as much as you can. It helped me to keep a notebook close by to write down things I came across that I felt were important. As you read questions will come to mind, products will be recommended, training techniques, etc... A notebook will help you keep your thoughts sorted out. For a Yorkie with a strong CH pedigree from a reputable breeder I'd say $1700 is about right, but you can get a beautiful, healthy Yorkie pup for less if you're patient. Good luck in your search! |
