i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about doggies trying to bolt out the front door. cuz whenever anyone opens the door my dog is right there and she tries to run out front and its really hard to catch her and i'm afraid she will get hit by a car. :eek:

One of my boys used to do that all the time, he outgrew it thank goodness! Try to distract him with a treat or something everytime someone needs to open the door... Or put a gate up near the door that will let people but keep him from going to the door area. Im sure your baby will outgrow it in time though!

Practice, Practice, Practice!!

Every morniong as I kissed hubby goodbye at the door - I told Bailey to sit and stay. All eyes on Bailey as hubby opened the door and left then followed with a treat.

As we progressed, we left the door open a little longer and started to relax a little - and gradually began to wean the treats away.

Now, Bailey will not go through the front door and/or garage door until permission is granted. Yipee!!

Had same problem with Eddie......got FIRM with stay and sit before opening door.....and never let your pet go out the door first...always the master///we practiced within the house going room to room opening doors..//worked well.....after about 5 practice rounds...he got a treat... hpoe this helps...now we are working with Maggie to do the same routine.....

Wow, everyone sounds great with the training!

I however, do not trust Violet. The little bugger has already run out multiple times, so I just put a gate in my front and back door (so now my doors look like little mini-horse stalls). :rolleyes: The things we do for our babies.:)

you must be firm with her....they can scense if your confident ....and in charge or just going through the motions.......we started out with a neck coller and leash...must be very careful with the neck coller....approach door..pull gently upwards on leash to stop her ...command sit....and proceed....repeat drill untill she understands who is in charge....as for walking my yorkies...we ALWAYS use a harness.......hope this will give you an idea or two.......be patient and FIRM......it may save her life! check out ..theperfectdog.com......Don Sullivans dog training kit........believe it or not it works!....We bought it...and by God with in two days we had Eddie doing the stay command...even as I walked away from him.....Good Luck.

I have a baby gate at my kitchen door to keep the dogs from going in and out at will. It works well to keep Puddin' in and the other ones out. Fortunately I have a walled courtyard at the front of my house and the gates have "dog bars" (narrow spaces to keep the dogs from going through). My entire property has double doors or gates before reaching the outside so there is little chance someone will escape.

If I had your situation, though, I would put up a baby gate at the door and/or put a leash on the dog before opening the door. You could hang a leash on the doorknob to have it ready. Training, of course, is the ultimate answer, but until your baby is trained and trustworthy, I would do the gate and the leash.

Ah I know what you mean! My yorkie use to do it every time my husband or I walked out the front door. Once he had both of us chasing him in the front yard and finally I had to jump and dive to catch him! Fortunately he hasn't done it in a while. Normally I'll tell him to sit,stay and wait before I open any door. This seems to have helped.

Great suggestion, we've got to practice this. They know wait but since we rarely get visitors at the front door (always thru garage) they get so wound up. The UPS driver knows to get ready to catch a dog when the door opens-lol.
