Puppy Mill Fears After attending a small canine 'faire' this weekend and silently listening to conversation I greatly fear that the Puppy Mill situations are about to get worse in the Midwest. With the RV industry collapse and most of the work force unemployed and with 60% of that workforce Amish in Northern Indiana they are turning to tried and true avenues of making money. Puppies. It's a cash crop. I know for a fact that a gentleman sold 4 pug puppies at this gathering and with what was said I feel it may have been to a broker. Now I can understand amping up one part of your financials when another fails and as long as they run a clean shop and do what they're supposed to I don't have a problem BUT having been past a number of these places I see the potential if not already the fact that it's getting ready to get bad and with no one to call that can do anything the frustration is already starting to build. |
That's scarey! |
I strongly feel with the economy the way that it is, puppy mills are going to be on the rise also. To only make matters worse, there are going to be more and more animals turned over to shelters, or just plain abandoned due to the fact that people aren't going to be able to provide for them. I found a yorkie in a shelter just one county over while looking on petfinder, he already had several applications, just last week, and that is the first yorkie I have ever found to be what I would consider local. :( Jeri and Harley:aimeeyork |
It just may have the opposite effect, hopefully. If people are loosing jobs, homes and giving up the pet's they already have and can't afford, why would other's want to pay 1,000.00 and over for a Yorkie from a pet store? That would be the last thing on someone's list if money is tight I would think. |
I was thinking the opposite. With the poor economy there'll be less demand for puppies. This assumes (I know about assume) that people are sensible enough to realize that dogs cost money for their lifetime. Likely not the case. |
I got mine from an Amish breeder who is also a friend for $350.00. The most he's ever sold one for was $400.00. All purebreds. Plus he was selling to someone not from here. These prices are average and not expected to riase because of all the new breeders starting up. Our local shelter was overrun at the beginning of the year by people getting laid off. They had 400+ new dogs dropped off there in under 2 months. It was insane. The way it looked a number of the gentlemen were getting ready to do business with the brokerages. |
