New Yorkie Owner Hey all, Just picked up my little boy pup on Thursday night! Still havent decided on a name for the little guy but i just wanted to drop a line and say hi. Also, I read the sticky on hypoglycema, is it normal for a little pup to crash every couple of hours during the day? I'm getting a little worried and was going to go to the vet on Monday or Tuesday. Anything I can do in the mean time? Thanks, Joe |
Puppies sleep alot. I remember when I first got Roxie. I read that it's good to encourage them to rest quite a bit. I always left food and water available at all times because being so small they need it. As long as your little one is eating and drinking I wouldn't worry so much about the sleeping. Pretty soon they will play more and sleep less. Roxie will be 2 tomorrow and she still likes a nap after a good romp, food and water and a potty break. |
By the way, Congrats on your new little one and Welcome to YT!! |
thanks for your the info and the welcome! should i bother putting a bit of sugar in his water bowl? |
Hypoglycemia is NOT normal. If you notice inappropriate tiredness (like sleepy right after waking up from a nap), loss of coordination, shaking, slow or labored breathing, general weakness, glazed look in eyes, ect. these are all signs that your puppy's bloodsugar level is dangerously low. Have either Nutrical (a puppy version of orange juice when a diabetic has a low blood sugar episode -- it has lots of sugar and some vitamins) or karo syrup on hand. The Nutrical you can basically put on your finger and rub under the tongue (if the puppy won't lick it himself), the karo syrup you can do the same, or some people mix it with water and use a syringe to get it in the puppy. Keep administering every few minutes until the puppy perks up. If he isn't starting to recover in 5-10 minutes, bring him to the vet. Hypoglycemia can cause seizures and eventually death in small puppies. So its important to feed them regular meals every 3-4 hours, no longer. Others might have more detailed info. for you, but that's the basics. Heidi |
