warning about grapes! i don't know if everyone knows this, but grapes are toxic to animals! i didn't know this and found out the hard way! saturday we dropped our 8 month old yorkie, max, off at the grandparents to puppysit for the weekend. before we left i gave him one grape (we were making chicken salad w/ grapes in it and i thougth he might like it). when the grandparents dropped him off at our house yesterday, the said he was very sick all day sunday........slept all day, lethargic, fever, chills, no energy and he finally threw up what looked like just bile, stomach acids and the grape was in it. he still wasn't acting normal when they brought him home. i looked up online and found out that grapes are toxic to animals! needless to say, i freaked out and called the animal poison control center. they said grapes are toxic to animals and can cause acute kidney failure. they advised that since he is a small dog, even though he only ate one grape, that he needed to go to the emergency vet (our vet was closed) and get blood work done to check his kidneys. so we spend 2 hours there and luckily his kidney bloodwork came back normal...what a relief! well this morning he is still not acting normal....all he has done is lay around with a very sad look on his face and he still won't eat or drink! he's had a few sips of water since saturday but won't eat anything. so, i am going to take him to the vet when they open this morning b/c i'm afraid he's going to get dehydrated. i just wanted to make sure everyone knew that grapes & raisins can be toxic to animals. does anyone know where i can find a list of everything dogs shouldn't eat? brooke & "max" |
OMG that is scary - I hope he's ok !!! Have you tried a syringe to feed him water ? I don't know if you should try Nutrucal for him if he's not eating but it sounds like a vet visit is the way to go today ...poor baby - you really ARE lucky - grapes can be fatal....thank goodness he only had one ! When I first got my Chanel 3 years ago ...I looked at many sites about toxic foods - I still had the search from looking at it recently ...and you can type TOXIC FOOD FOR Dogs/CANINES - There are many everyday things that dogs just cannot eat - THIS Page has a great list to start you off - http://www.risingwoods.org/OURFAMILY...odsfordogs.htm GOOD Luck !!! I hope he gets to feeling better and has no after effects from this - Please let us know what the vet says |
That's so scary! I knew they were toxic but not in that small a quantity. Hope Max bounces back soon! We will have you all in our prayers! Toto sends puppy kisses to little Max! |
That is scary! I am glad he is okay now though. |
Great list Villette. I bookmarked it. I've had dogs for years and never knew about grapes. Onions and chocolate yes, but never knew about grapes. Meanwhile, my husband has fed them to our dogs before!! Just like you, Brooke, he thought he was giving them a treat. I'm just glad nothing ever happened because I never would have suspected grapes! I'm sure little Max will be fine now that it's out of his system. Poor baby. To be sick on a holiday weekend! |
I am so sorry to hear about poor little Max and I hope he is better today. I think that was Hefner's problem this weekend when he was vomitng. I never saw him eat a grape but I found a couple on the floor that I think the kids had dropped and I bet he ate one. Because our dogs are so small, it doesn't take much of a bad food to make them sick.....it's just not worth the risk to feed just a small piece of chocolate of just one grape because, I know from what I have read about chocolate, the toxin stays and continues to built up and accumulate so everytime they have just a small piece it is added onto what they were already fed. I just stay away from any of those things entirely. Good luck AT THE VET. |
That is so sad. I hope that Max gets better soon. I knew of this and was eating some grapes on the weekend, and my bf went to give Deegan one, but luckily I saw him and told him how they were toxic to them. I also printed out a list that I found on here a while agoe of all the foods that yorkies are not allowed to have for my bf when I am not around. Anything we can do to prevent Deegan from getting sick. Feel better soon Max! |
Omgsh.. so sorry to hear. I hope he gets better soon! how strange you post this b/c my sisters asked me just yesterday if Chicle can eat grapes .... I YELLED OUT A NOOOOOOOOOOOO! they ask me why and I didnt know why but now i know its TOXIC. thanks for the post! |
How scary!! We've always had dogs around our house and knew the usual no chocolate, etc. We use to give my big dogs a grape or two because they LOVED playing with them...I guess I should really be aware that this is BAD for them.. especially my 5 pound yorkie! oh goodness. I learn something new everyday! |

I hope your little one is okay. I know this had to be very scary for you. I was aware of some of these toxins. Thanks Villette for the additional information on toxins for our fur babies. :p I love these resources, as I like to put this information in puppy packs to go with my babies when they go to their forever homes. |
