This kinda bums me out. The "other" people lol. Why do they seem to be obsessed over how big someone else's dog is??? It shouldn't matter, as long as they are loved. Hmmmph. |

my theory is that a lot of breeders advertise tiny yorkies and sell them at a higher price, so there is a misunderstanding of what the 'proper' size is for a yorkie. and people are mislead to believe that 'smaller' yorkies are 'worth more' because a lot of breeders charge 'more' for smaller sized yorkies. what you think about my theory? |

I think the ONLY worry should be is their health. Not how big or little they are. I know smaller ones tend to be sickly, but if they ARE healthy, why should the size matter? It is the heart inside that matters most. IMO. Im sure this is different if you are showing & breeding. But to the general public (and usually pretty uninformed) it just shouldnt matter. |

i am sure if people were more aware, then they would not make all the 'size' comments. |

Yep! I agree. Information is the key. And unfortunately, we are insulted before they learn! |
I know exactly what you mean! I've had some people be so mean to me when they see Silvia in person. Her pictures don't really accentuate how very small she is, and seeing her in person shocks some people. I didn't plan to adopt such a tiny little thing, but it worked out that way. I've even been told I'm irresponsible for owning her! Like I've starved her or something to make her as small as she is! (ironically, my vet tells me she's fat, cause she has a belly) Speaking of ignorance, on another note, I've also been accused of using peroxide to "bleach" Silvia's hair, because "there is no way a yorkie is naturally that color!" Don't you just love stupidity?! |
All I can say is: it's incredible! :D |
HChallette, I love the name Silvia and she is so cute. How tiny is she? I cna't believe someone accused you of bleaching her!!! I think she would be bald if you tried it!!! Makes you wonder how some people think! or don't think for that matter! |
I won't be offended by the general public and their remarks because you guys are right. They are just ignorant and just honestly don't know. I am offended, however, by other yorkie owners that are just downright rude. Ginger is all Yorkie, weighed 3 pounds, 12 ounces at 12 weeks. A lady carrying a very small Yorkie at Petsmart told me Ginger couldn't be full blooded at her weight. She's too big. Geez... she is only 3 pounds. It all in the way it's said, I guess. I'm not naive. Ginger will be on the larger side of the scale but that doesn't mean she not all Yorkie! Yorkies come in all sizes and they all deserve LOVE! That's the bottom line. If someone has to comment can't it be on the postive side?! "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." |
I think I am going to start handing out standards, and info to people that ask me questions. Making a difference one person at a time. :) |

I had that happen to us one time too. The lady was telling me that Tatum was much bigger than her's - at the time Tatum was around 4-5 lbs (about 2 years old) and this puppy she was holding was 12 weeks old. Um, sure, of course mine is bigger than yours. I wanted to ask her if she really believed that her's was finished growing. Sheesh.... |

chelop555: Thank you, I thought the name Silvia fit pretty perfectly considering her color! Yeah, I have also been asked all of the questions about "why would you want such a tiny dog?" and "well I don't know why you even got attached to her, she's not going to live long." I feel like asking them if they would give away or put down their child if they didn't turn out the way they wanted them; too short, wrong color hair or god-forbid handicapped. It just really burns me up when people ask me questions like this. I REALLY have to hold my tongue to keep from saying, "here hold my pocket-sized dog while I kick your a**!" :D |
I just laugh at these people.........I met a lady at the vet's office the other day. I had Prissy, 7 lb poodle, and Jasmine, 1 lb 8 ounce yorkie, with me. She had a poodle with her. She opened the conversation with "My, your poodle is awfully big" and "Your yorkie is small now, but she will be alot bigger than my little one. I just had to laugh at her. I know she didn't appreciate this, but the constant, my dog is bigger, my dog is smaller..................really does crack me up. We loved Prissy when we got her and we love Jasmine and if Jasmine stays tiny, we will continue to love her and if Prissy all of a sudden put on weight we would still love her. My husband and I have both put on weight since we got married and we still love each other and neither one of us asked each other how much we weighed before we fell in love. People are just too funny. Laugh is takes less facial muscles and it is so much more pleasant! Love can't be weighed! Have a great day with your furbabies!!!!!!!!!! |

:lol tears:sidesplt: Thanks for that,I needed a good laugh. |
I have 3 Yorkies of different sizes. Axl will be 1 at the end of May and is about 10 pounds, Yumi Yasha will be 1 at the end of May also and she is almost 5 pounds and then I have Jeter who is 19 months old and is 2 1/2 pounds. For the most part I get people telling me how cute my Yorkies are when we have them out for walks, but I do get allot of people saying things about Jeter's small size and never about my Axl's bigger size, witch is kind of odd to me:rolleyes: I have had a stranger ask me how much I would sell him to them for because they were looking for a small male to breed with their female Yorkie:eek:, I have had one lady at the PetCo say that he would not stay small for so long cause "when they turn 6 months they hit a growth spurt " This cracked me up because Jeter was well over a year old when she said this to me LOL! When I told her Jeter's age she came up with more negative things to say about him and ME for owning such a small dog. She even said I was most likely "taken" by Jeter's Breeder ( who she had no clue to who she even is) for a "TEACUP" I just walked away laughing at her and her nonsense! |
Good for you! |
I am new to being owned by a yorkie ....but I know when I was looking for my furbaby I looked at alot of breeds and size never was the issue for me. I wanted a baby that would have a beautiful pixie face, beautiful coat, and a beautiful personality and from all I was told and read yorkies won hands down. I have never been sorry and I dont care if laddy stays tiny as long as he is healthy or if he gets to be 20 pounds he is exactly what I wanted in my furbaby  |
It's funny - I guess size mattered to me but that's how I ended up being blessed with a Yorkie. I had a 15 year old Shih Tzu that passed away last fall. She was extremely small for a Shih Tzu. She weighed about 6-7 pounds healthy. When I started looking for a new puppy I realized that she was so small. I loved her size because she was so easy to travel with but I didn't want to buy from a breeder that was breeding outside the standard. I read something on-line that said if you really want one that small maybe you should look at a different breed. I had thought about a Yorkie in the past so that's what I started looking at. I wound up with Sadie and she is the light of my life. I think she's going to be about 4 to 4 1/2 pounds but at this point if she were 15 pounds I'd still love her just the same! |

OH MY GOSH ... THAT IS HILLARIOUSSSS!!! ROFL seriously I'm on the floor. Someone called my dog big and I wanted to smack her. That's like calling someone's kid fat (even thou sadly as a student nurse working in the hospital ... there are soooo many overweight children it makes me sad ... but I would NEVER flat out tell some ... "damn your kid is fat") I mean there is a nice way to say things. Anyways my dog is actually visually small for a 10pounder. His fur does the puppy thing still ::poof:: LOL Thank you for the laugh. |
