Help With AKC Registration All- I am hoping that someone can help me or provide me with some guidance on how I can get SophieKate register. For a little background, SophieKate was purchases at Petland (yes I know, but this was before we knew the horrible place it was). Her original owner had her for exactly 1 week and decided she did not want a puppy and "rehomed" her with me -thank goodness. So along with my beautiful puppy I got this packet of information including a "Certificate of Pedigree". I have tried to register her with the AKC but I do not have the proper paperwork so they tell me. The Certificate of Pedigree says SophieKates Sire is Onion Creek Chipper and Dam is Onion Creek Anna Marie. With that said the logical things for me to do is Googled both names which I did and found nothing. I did find an Onion Creek Kennel in Buda Texas but have not heard back from them yet. I am so discourage, I have called Petland at least 5 times and went into their store when it was open (closed in December) at least 10 times. My attempts to get a paper trail of her ownership have been useless. I checkd the USDA listing for breeders and found nothing for Onion Creek. Any suggestions? it will not break my heart if SophieKate is not registered, she is a pet and spayed so no breeding will ever happen with her. I just would now like to know where she came from originally. I have learned a lot from Yorkie Talk and I know I was wrong to accept a dog from Petland but she is healthy (Thank you God). I would like to see her parents if possible. |
Hmmm...I guess it would depend on what the "certificate" you have actually is... Is the actual registration paperwork for the dog? |
If I was you I would go to the AKC website, and find the number. You can call them and they can answer all of your questions. They will tell you exactly what they need as far a the proper paperwork, etc. I have called them several times and they are super helpful. |
Hi, In response to your question on the certificate, I don't think it is anything official to the AKC. What is show is SophieKates "pedigree" is it titled a "certicate of pedigree" and it shows the family tree. It is nice to have but not sure how official it is. Sunnie, thank you for the idea on calling the AKC I am going to call them right now. I will keep you posted on what I find out. I am sure I am not the only poor soul who purchased a dog from Petland and never received the paperwork. Hopefully if I find anything I can help the next person. |
I just got off the phone with a very nice lady from the AKC, she did confirm for me that SophieKates Mom and Dad were registered with the AKC however the breeder never registered the litter of puppies. The lady from the AKC suggested I check with American Pet Registry also since there maybe a chance she is registered there. Also she suggested I send in an Alternate Pet Registry to the AKC with the paperwork I have. I was trying to get the breeders name out of the lady from the AKC however she couldn't release it. She did however slip one time and said the name, I believe the last name is Diamond. Thank you for the suggestion on calling the AKC, you're right they are really nice. |
Has Petland ever once indicated she is even eligable for AKC registration? If so you can research her sire and/or dam's pedigree for a 15 dollar fee each. It is more likely she is registered with an alternative registry and essentially it is impossible to learn anything with the pedigree you presently have. Puppy brokers to large pet stores, such as Lambriar and Hunte's, often provide these pedigrees but there isn't any way to verify validity. |

Hi can you point me in the right direction to research her Sire and Dam? I looked on the AKC site and couldn't find anything. All of your help (and the other posters) is much appreciated. |

Thank you so much for the link. I spent a great deal of time today searching the AKC site and attempting to find SophieKates original breeder (or Puppy Mill). As luck would have it I spoke to this lovely lady in Oklahoma named Judy Lane thinking that perhaps SophieKate came from her. Judy was so nice, after telling me she did not have the sire or the dame on the paper work she talked to me for probably 15 minutes. Judy took the time to explain to me that even if I got the paper work from Petland there is a good chance it may not even belong to my dog. She then asked me some very rational questions: 1. Are you going to breed your dog - no, SophieKate is spayed 2. Why do you want to register her - I couldn't honestly answer her more then saying I wanted to find out if she came from a PuppyMill. I am so thankful she asked the questions because Judy than explained to me that I am not alone, a lot of people have bought puppies from a pet store and now wonder. She told me that if I love my dog and she is in good health I need to stop worrying so much and just enjoy my puppy. She is right, I need to do just that and stop feeling so quilty. Judy was also very direct but helpful with me on how I should go about getting my next dog (when I get another one). Here is the part I think is really great, Judy gave me her email address and told me to call her or email her anytime with questions or concerns I may have about my dog - she will be more than happy to help me. I was at the dog park this evening and I happened to see my Vet with her dog. I was telling her about my day spent trying to track down SophieKates parents and the conversation with Judy. My Vet also assured me that I was a good pet owner, I was honest where I got SophieKate and that helps her in making sure SophieKate is overall healthy and happy. Thank you all for your advice, it is appreciated. I think I will take the advice offered me and just enjoy my beautiful unregistered but awesome puppy. |
