Question about keeping puppy warm at night We pick up our new puppy this afternoon. Since we turn our thermostat way down (63) at night, I am concerned about keeping him warm. With Doolittle, we crated him at night and I put a heating pad on low under the crate and a blanket over the top. That seemed to keep the crate at a nice temperature. We have decided to use a larger pen for the new puppy at night and crate only during the day. I'm worried he won't be warm enough though and I don't want to raise the temperature and our heating bills. |
We keep ours low like that also and mine are fine. You could put a sweater on him when its cooler |
He should be ok. I would put some small fleece blankets in the crate for him to snuggle into. |
Thanks for the quick replys. The puppies are just so tiny (Doolittle was 1.5 lbs, our new one is suppossed to be 3 lbs but his picture looks alot smaller) and I'm cold natured so EVERYONE is cold, right? Doing research after Doolittle, I'm so concerned about health issues in Yorkies. I don't want to do anything to jeopardize him. |
You could also get one of those things you heat up in the microwave and put in their bed to keep it warm |
We have the microwavable warmer but it gets cold after a few minutes. I have noticed when I cover Snickers up, I'll wake up in the middle of the night and see him and sometimes he is on top of his blankets and sometimes snuggled into them. I don't think they mind either way and get warm and cold like us. Fleece blankets will do it!! But be careful in the beginning not to put too much bedding as your pup may pee on them and then sleep on the other side.:) |
Congrats on your new baby! At his age he should be okay. You could also get him a little sweater or romper to put on. I no a lot of the stores Petco et cetera are putting their winter clothes on the clearance rack so they should be very affordable. |

I agree with the poster who suggested the Fleece Blanket. SophieKate has a few and she is always cuddling up on one when she is tired. She seems to like the softness (so does the cat). |
We use a Sunbeam electric throw. It's like an electric blanket, but a lot smaller. We set it on low, and Prince loves it. He will sleep on it for about 10 minutes, then he'll get in bed with us and our electric blanket!! |
Before I moved Missy into my bed, I would put a hot water bottle under the blanket that goes in the bottom of her crate. Then I'd tuck her in with another blanket on top of her AND she wore a sweater. |
We turn our heat down at night,Sam sleeps with us usually under the covers but if it's really cold I put his jammies on. |
We keep a small heater in the bedroom for the little ones. Also beds with soft blankets. My house is huge, so it gets pretty cold EVERYWHERE after the SO turns the temp really low (brrr) and I find putting a little heater and closing off the vent helps keep the room nice and warm. |
