large breed dog after getting a yorkie??? I have a 2 year old male yorkie (10lb) and my husband just rescued a 7 month old male great dane boxer mix (50lb going to be about 70lb). Did anyone have a yorkie and then get a larger breed dog? How did the transition go? Any major issues with the size difference? I still have hesitations about this but my husband assures me they will get along great. They seem to be tolerating each other but whenever the larger dog wants to play he lifts his paw in the air and that causes my yorkie to start growling. If anyone has been through this please let me know how the experience went and if you did anything different with training the larger dog. Thanks!! |

You'll just want to watch for the larger dog stepping on your baby. I try and let the little dogs out the doors first as my GP will rusht the door and step on them. You have any plans on obedience classes? It'd be great to talk with the trainer on this issue. I can tell you, that I had my toy poodle, Mischa and then got my GP, Garrett as a puppy. I trained Garrett not to "play" with Mishca as she's too small & older, and I didn't want him to see her as a toy. They do great now, they lay on the floor together and give each other kisses. However, Garrett was here when Barley was added (adopted as an adult). They get along well in the month we've had them. They are actually now playing with toys together. Good luck with them. I'd love to hear more from you on how they are doing. |
Hello, Well I have a 2 year old pit bull and just got my yorkie (Tobi) 3 months ago! He is 6 months! At first I was so scared But things are great!!! They love eachother, play all day long together, sleep together etc...You do have to watchout for the baby getting stepped on! I think things will be great. Its so fun to watch them together! Good luck to you and congrats on the new puppy!!!! |
The best way for them to bond is to take them for a walk, it help them to form a pack. Maybe you can start with the new dog and only one of the yorkie. Congratulation on your new addition ! :D |
We have a 165 lb great dane that lives in the house with us. He and Boomer are great friends, and he is very gentle with him. Boomer has learned to avoid Jack's big feet;) |
CONGRATS on your new addition! 1 Attachment(s) I have a 100+ Old English Sheepdog! Mika too is on the larger size for a yorkie (8lb ish) but she was only 3lb when I brought her home as a pup and she has never been injured by him or our 40/50lb staff! He does'nt look very big in this pick as he's just lost a few pound in HAIR!LOL! |

I rent the basement from a friend of mine, and they have a 12 yr old Rottie, and Fiona LOVES him! they get along pretty well, however, since King is a bit older, I sometimes have to watch him with FIona, but other than that they are good! :) |
I have a 50lb english setter and a 3lb yorkie. My setter is really gentle with my yorkie. They do play well together. My setter is 7 years so he is mellower then a pup would be. My yorkie is only 6 months. |
