Boys vs. Girls
 

Besides the obvious, are there any real differences between male and female Yorkies?
I've had my girl for 5 years this November and I love her to peices, but sometimes I wonder if a male Yorkie would be any different to have.
Any input?

I did a Google search & found (How To Choose Between Male and Female Dogs | How To Do Things.com), copied below. Of course this is just one of a great many results.

The following characteristics often apply to bitches:
Independent - Bitches tend to want to be in control of the entire situation. They may come to their owner when they are seeking affection but will often move away when they have had enough.
Stubborn - In many packs, a bitch is typically the Alpha. Female dogs crave more control of situations and are quick to respond to perceived challenges with fierceness.
Territorial - Female dogs mark in the same way male dogs do. A spayed female may continue to mark for her entire lifetime regardless of when she is spayed while most males will cease marking behaviors shortly after they are neutered and the testosterone levels subside.
Reserved - Bitches are generally less affectionate and friendly than male dogs. This characteristic is noticeable in puppies and becomes more pronounced with age.
Changes in Mood or Behavior - It is also important to note that if you do not spay your bitch, she will come into heat at approximately one year of age and approximately every six months thereafter. During this time, there will be some bleeding as well as a change in mood or behavior.

The following characteristics often apply to male dogs:
Affectionate - Male dogs are typically more affectionate than bitches. They tend to crave attention from their owners more than bitches and as a result, display more affectionate behaviors.
Exuberant - A male dog is also more likely to be fun-loving and outgoing throughout his lifetime than a bitch. While a bitch tends to become more reserved as she ages, a male dog maintains a more puppy-like exuberance throughout his lifetime.
Food-Motivated - Males are often very motivated by food. This food motivation can make training extremely easy as treats can be used to lure and reward a dog to display desired behaviors.
Attentive - While bitches tend to be more independent, males tend to be more focused on their human companions. They want to always be close to the human and are very eager to please.
Aggressive Behaviors - It is also important to note that intact males may display aggressive behaviors toward other males or exhibit marking behaviors. Additionally, intact males should be kept away from females in heat unless a breeding is planned.

My female and male are nothing like that.

I would have say mine are opposite.

I have 2 females and 3 males & I have to say all 3 of my males are much more affectionate and intelligent than my 2 females. All 5 of them are my sweeties but the females are territorial and will growl and snarl but not my males. So I have to say the males are more loving and want to please me verses the girls. All 5 have been altered.

That fits my little male exactly.

I want a cuddle bug! LOL. I keep trying to cuddle my little girl but she doesn't let me do it for long. :( I want to snuggle with her in bed, but I can't bring her to my level, I have to curl up next to her where SHE decides to lay on the bed. :( I just love burying my face in that fur and smell that musky dog sexiness. LOL (not the "wet dog" stinkiness :p ). With my previous dog, she wouldn't mind any amount of snuggling and she's female though a different breed. She'd warm my chest and/or belly when we curl up for a nap, and she'd let me drool on her fur and all the while, she'd be snoring and dream barking, etc.

When looking for a yorkie, I went from boy to girl to boy to girl to, well, now I have a... tomboy of a girl. :p I'm definitely leaning towards getting a boy as my next one if it's a yorkie, but if it's shih tzu, the hubby and I are still split. LOL

For the most part, the list was right on for us too....

Belle is affectionate when she wants to be and that is it....She is extremely food oriented...lol..And she loves to play fetch...Very tom boyish...

Barney is the leader...What he says goes.....

Both boys are my constant companion and want loving 24/7...


And I wouldn't have it any other way...lol

I have 3 boys and can I just say that they are wonderful! All 3 of them are stuck to me like glue (which means private potty time can be a challenge--there is always someone scratching at the door to get in). Boys are sweethearts.

On the other hand, most bitches live up to their name ;)

Here is some more food for thought too:

Boys are usually less expensive than girls (its a supply and demnand thing)
Neutering is ALWAYS cheaper and less invasive than a spay
And if you neuter them at 6 mos they will more than likely squat to pee :)

I find that correct, for the most part.

I think that is a very accurate description of the difference of males and females. I only had one female that I felt acted more like a male, in that she was so sweet and affectionate toward me and was very loving. We had a very strong bond between us.

I can't say as far as Yorkies because Tobie is my first and we have only had him for a little over a month but as for the other dogs I've had throughout my life that description is pretty accurate. That's actually why we specifically got a male yorkie because the males I've had were more affectionate and less moody.
