New Puppy? Not sure on age??? help?? Hi everyone! my name is Deanna this is my first post on yorkietalk. A little about myself I have two Yorkies one male and one female, Benji is my first yorkie he is close to 2 years old and is my pride and joy. Raven is my new puppy that I just got 3 days ago. As for Raven im not real sure on her age. I say this b/c when my husband and I went to buy her we went through the same breeder we got benji from because benji was a healthy and turned into a great dog! When we went to look at Raven for the first time it was love at first sight of course. When I first held her my first question was how old is she? The breeder then began to tell me that she is 8 weeks old born on 1/8/09. I believed him b/c Ive never had a puppy that was 8 weeks old. usually i get my puppies between 10-12 weeks. So of course we got her and I asked the breeder what she eats. he begins to tell me he syringe feeds b/c he likes to be sure the puppy is getting her nutrition while he was gone for a couple hours at a time. When my husband and I brought Raven home we noticed that she walked like she just learned how to walk her eyes were a slight blue which i didnt notice right away. we began to question weather or not she was really 8 weeks. After much research I know she is not 8 weeks. here are some pictures of what she looks like.
I made an appointment with the vet the day after tomorrow and i will know for sure. she's very active Ive been giving her baby food chicken flavor with also some puppy formula (milk) and of course water. I want to make sure im doing the right things im so nervous. The day we bought her home she had diarrhea but that stopped now she hasnt done a #2 in almost 2 days! im concerned?? Ive been trying to stimulate her by whipping her backside with a warm cloth and Ive been trying to give her lots of excersice. I hope she is not constipated?? When do puppys started eating hard dog food? she tried once but couldnt chew it. ive been keeping her warm all day. This is all new to me and im trying my best to make her healthy and happy puppy. Any pointers?? |
Hi, and Welcome to YT. The Vet is definitely the best idea. I don't think whipping her backside with a warm towel is so great though. Maybe soaking her in a warm tub of water, to relax her bowels might do the trick. Also you might want to try pure pumpkin to get her regular. Your picture did not come out. Also with the hard food, you might want to soak it in a mix of water and lower sodium chix broth. That will make it easier for her for now. I am sure that there will be many other suggestions to help you and your new baby. Good luck and keep us posted on her progress. Quote:

Oh my goodness! She looks more like 4-5 weeks at the most. Did you get a registration application showing when the litter was born? Look at this site: Yorkshire Terrier, understanding yorkie puppy vital growth stages how to be a puppy She has pictures of puppies at different ages. All are a little different, but just like you, I highly doubt that puppy is 8 weeks. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new puppy. I agree with the others that your vet should be able to tell you more--teeth development? She looks very young. |
in my opinion she does looks like 4 to 5 weeks old.... |
You can look through the Yorkie nursery here and see the differences in puppy ages too. I found these this post that has both 4 and 5 week puppies pictured: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yt-...-pictures.html Your puppy is a cutie for sure, but I would be concerned about the age. |
I just went to the website you posted. That one pic with all the moms and babies was just so cute. Thanks for posting. Quote:

She does look like 4 to 6 weeks.Make sure you have nutracal give this to her as needed. Probably 3 to 4 times a day. Make sure she eats and drinks about 4 times a day. Let us know what the vet says. I would report this Breeder..This Baby is too Young and should be with its momma.... |
She looks younger than 8 weeks to me also |
I hope some of the breeders see this post & have some help for you...they are very knowledgable. |
It's illegal to sell a puppy under eight weeks old in the state of Maryland (MD CRIM LAW § 10-613). You should report that breeder! :thumbdown |
I agree totally!!!! She looks to be about 5 weeks to me. Did you stress to the vet staff that you spoke to that she's been constipated for 2 (3 now sorry) days? and ask them what to do until your appointment? And did you tell them you think the breeder lied about her age as she looks so young and you're concerned over her not eating? I agree with the canned puppy food. She should easily eat this and get the stuff mentioned in an earlier post. With puppies so small you have to worry about her sugar getting too low. But congratulations on her and welcome to YT! I'm so glad she has you for a momma as you sound very into her health and will look out for her well being. Thank you for being such a good mommy! |

thanks so much for all your advice everyone! I go to the vet tomorrow evening so I will be sure to update you all on what they tell me. She is doing very well so far she had a bowel movement finally which i had to save (fun fun) to bring to the vet tomorrow. Im still feeding her baby food and formula 4-5 times a day she is doing well with that too she is not being syringe feed anymore she finally eats on her own. hopefully in he next couple weeks I can introduce solid food. :aimeeyork |
