silky or cottony??? I am a new yorkie owner. Madison came at 5 mos old and is now 9 mos. I've read alot about silky vs cotton-y hair. How do you know? Does Madison have silky hair? or cottony? what do I look for? Thank you in advance  |
Madison looks like she has the silky hair, from what your pictures show. But im no expert. |
Take a picture of your baby in a dark setting and see what color her eye shine is. If it's green or turquoise she should have a silk coat...if it's red or orange it will be cottony. I know a lot of people don't believe in that thoery but it has held true for my dogs so far. |
wow that is really interesting theory. I've never heard that before. I went and looked at pictures I have of her a few are - her eyes look dark green and one her eyes look gold. I guess I'll have to get some more pictures.... ok duh in a dark setting. I will have to do that tonight.... can't wait |
Sometimes a dog will have what's called a modified coat...I think it's a combination coat...so maybe it would show one of each with that type coat? I just know mine have all had silk coats with green or turquoise green eye shine. You can also shine a flashlight in their eyes and see if you see color besides the dark blue of a puppy. |
I have had the eye shine prove true at times but not always. Actually, it is myth that was started years ago and made the rounds until it has been presented as fact according to what an old time show breeder told me.. if your baby's hair feels cool when you grab a handful of it, it is most likely silky. If it matts, it is likely cottony.. I NEVER go by eye shine. Eye shine is based on a variety of things, camera angle, light in room and even what type camera you have. |
dee your yorkies are beeeee-autiful! Madisons hair doesn't really matt. but it does get what I'd call stringy. especially before she's brushed. which I only do once daily. |

If you want to see the true eye shine in your dog, don't use a flash on them, instead, look at them in the eyes with natural light behind them. Then you will see the true color of the eye shine :) Different flashes will produce different results. I think eye shine goes more to depth of color of the coat then to whether it is silk or cottony.
