This may be a stupid Question...but So we brought Finley home yesterday. I have been trying to upload pictures but it won't let me. anyway...I have never delt with puppy pads..how long do you leave one down for? (how many times do you let him pee on it?) I know it is a stupid question, but I don't know! |
I think it depends on what you're comfortable with. Also, you may find that your little guy doesn't want to go there if it's too soiled but on the other hand, I think a little bit makes them go back to that area. I personally, would pick up the poo immediately but leave the pad down and change once a day unless it was excessively spoiled, then I'd change it sooner. |
No question is a stupid question. If your not sure it's better to ask. Most of the time this is the best place to come for answers!! |
Thank you very much! |
I don't think it's a dumb question at all. That's one of the great things about YT... the people are amazing and very helpful. Who better to ask than those that have 'been there done that' and are willing to share their experiences and knowledge. I can't give you a specific number of times they potty before I change the pad. What I have done is watch them to learn their body language when it come to the potty pad if that makes any sense. My two little girls will stop using the pad if it gets to messy for them and they will pick a clean spot on the floor so they don't have to step on the pad anymore if it gets to messy for their taste. When I see them avoiding spots where they have previously gone I change the pad. I pick up any poo after it happens and end up using about 3 to 4 pads a day. It's going to start getting nice here so as of yesterday we are starting to work with potty bells and going outside for potty breaks. I also wanted to mention that my two girls are now 15 weeks because I think the age of the pup could make a difference as well. They hold more volume. :) |
Congrats on your new baby. Potty training boy do we all love that. NOT! When I potty train my puppies I make sure I put them back in the same place so they no to go to that area. I also let them pee pee on it for the day taking the poop up immediately after the load was dropped. That way they can smell the urine and will return to that area. After they go I give them a little tiny piece of chicken jerky which they love. |
I think it depend on the dog. My dog won't use it if there isn't a clean stop on the pad to pee on. With a pup, you don't want to change it to often. I think 2 pads a day should be ok . |
I have a 14 week old puppy and I go through about 2 pads in a 24 hour period. I change it when there are very few "clean" spots left on the pad. This also seems to be around the same time that the pad begins to smell. Everytime I change a pad, I make sure to press the new pad into a recent pee spot on the old pad so that the smell transfers over and she knows to go there. It has worked great so far... she has NO pee mistakes off the pad!! Now if only I could get her to poo on the pad 100% of the time... |

To upload a picture on the regular forum, go to "Post Reply" located at the bottom of the thread page. Underneath where you type the message, you will see the words, "Manage Attachments." Select this, and another "menu" will appear. Upload pictures from your computer or a photo-hosting site. Photos must be Jpeg, png, jpg or gif files, and no bigger than 200 KB. For resizing pictures, here is a free program: Download IrfanView The best picture sizes to use for attachments are around 800 pixels, and the main reason they don't upload is that they are too big. |
I usually clean up the poo as soon as she does it...but I leave the pad at least for 1 day. Unless the pad is in a horrible condition... |
I prefer to get a couple of "uses" out of one....... but Seymour prefers a new one. Silly boy....... every time I put a new one down..... he makes sure it don't stay "new" for very long!!! :p |
Chloe Primrose will be 7 mos tues. so her puddles are getting a little bit bigger, so is her poo. When she was a little smaller, I would let her pee 3-4 times before changing the pad. I always take up the poo immediately. Now tho, she will not go on the pad if it has more than two pees on it. She is a very fastidious girl! I go thru 4-5 pads daily. Its a bit costly but I buy Out brand at WalMart, 30 ct for about $7. They are not the best but hold together well. The pad has to be in my kitchen area and I don't want to see a dirty pad anymore than she wants to use one. This is just the way we do it. |
I didn't know the answer to this either but Curly Mac quickly taught us how long. About 4 uses! LOL. After that, she refused to use it and would go pee on the floor next to it. I think all the pups are different but I've read several on here who said the same thing as me, the pup won't use it after (?) number of uses. I have found however, that she WILL use my new washable pads many many more times before I have to change them out. I think it's because they really soak up the moisture quickly and her paws don't have to touch it. |
I have 4 dogs using pee pads. I change them out first thing in the morning, one time in the afternoon and right before bedtime. |
Thank you all very much! I have to say we are enjoying Finley very much! We are using the pee pad by the door and we are also taking him outside. I have only have a few accidents...but what can you say when they are this little....we have not had any luck with him pooping on the pad, but he will poop outside so that is ok with me. As I am typing I am being attacked..lol...he wants my fingers... |
