walking a yorkie I am a somewhat new yorkie owner, and enjoy taking my yorkie (Simcha) out on walks. Only he gets very excited and pulls alot. I have heard that you have to be careful with certain collars because of their trachea colapsing. So I use a harness. What is a good way to get these active excited yorkies to stay by your side while walking. Anybody out there with some good tips!? :) |
With all of my dogs, I've always used the rule that we will not proceed in a forward motion unless they aren't pulling. As soon as they start to pull, I stop walking. They've all quickly caught on. |

If the above suggestions don't work, try a gentle leader harness. Also, use a treat. Hold it at your side where you want your Yorkie to be, and give it to him when he does it right. |
I tried the Gentle Leader, but it fell right off. I wonder if she just needed a smaller size. It appeared that it just didn't work on her. So they really do work on Yorkies too? |
I had one that pulled - I just held leash really close to me and only give her enough to be able to walk comfortably. After awhile she got it :D now she can walk off leash (we only do that in fenced park) right next to me |
I have tried to stop and not proceed, and generally he will come back and stand by me to only to get ahead again almost immediately upon restarting. I guess persistance is the thing. The only other problem I have is all the dogs we pass. He just goes crazy and gets all the other dogs excited. I am a big watcher of the Dog Whisperer and love those techniques. However he doesn't seem to have that many smaller dogs / yorkies on there and what I have tried works somewhat, but he is a very determined boy once he has something in his mind. I guess I just have a lot to learn. I am trying to be "calm and assertive"!! :) |
Sorry I can't help you. I am having the same problem with my Abby :( |

It's also a mind game. Your mental attitude, i.e., positive & can do, is important. With leash held close, walk briskly like you are walking by yourself. If you lose control, stop, get him calm, & start again. Be patient. It takes consistency & time. He will walk the way you teach him. |
for Yorkies you need the Pettite Gentle leader and Make is as small as possible, I bought the small one first and the only time I can use it is when Milo is in desperate need of a hair cut and it is over his winter sweater. I too stop when he pulls make him sit and then move on. I know the reason we are not that successful with this is because of me not him. It works for him every time, it my consistancy that is lacking. What is it ceaser says he trains people not dogs.....sooo true!!!:) |

When I was ready to walk Remington I had a friend of mine walk her dog (who knows how to walk on a leash) walk ahead of us for a bit and he at first did some pulling, and we waited a long time for him to be calm before starting again but he watched them walking, and caught on by the time we got to end of the street! |
After being pulled along by a strong border collie for 14 years being pulled by a yorkie is heaven lol:cool: If your really struggling try puppy classes they are excellent :animal36 |
I also use a gentle leader. They are great ! I like to leash Suzi on the bottom ring , she is much better then being leashed on the top ring. |
