Anyone ever been allergic to a Yorkie? My step-dad is allergic to most animal fur, dogs, cats, horses, etc. But I thought yorkies were "hypoallergenic." His cockapoo doesn't bother him, but she's been here for 4 years so maybe he just got used to her. Whenever he picks up Jackson, he breaks out on his arms, gets all red and gets these little bumps. They go away after 20 minutes or so, but I feel bad! I picked a smaller/hypo breed like a yorkie for that reason (I still live at home) Anyone ever heard of this? |
My daughter is allergic to most cats and dogs and we got the yorkies because people are not suppose to have allergic reactions to them. While she can pet them and hold them more often than other dogs she still has some allergic reasons to them. She is in college and works PT so she isn't home too often so it hasn't been a big deal |
I go down to my mom's house quite a bit and stay when my boyfriend's away from home for work. My mom has really bad allergies and Lilly bothers her. If Lilly licks her face on accident or if she touches my mom's face, my mom breaks out. However, I have horrid allergies too and Lilly doesn't really bother me. I try to keep her bathed, if I take her out and don't wipe her down, she bothers me. She even sleeps under the covers with me and gives me kisses daily and I'm always fine. |
I have a friend who's husband is allergic to yorkies just like any other dogs. Is eyes turn bright red almost instantly. With that said, he has allergies to just about everything! |
There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Yorkies and other single coated breeds like Maltese and Poodles are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, but it does happen as your father found out. |
I am usually allergic to dogs and I'm deathly allergic to cats but our Yorkie doesn't seem to bother me...UNLESS I don't bathe her every 3-4 days. I don't know what it is but we can snuggle and she'll get all over me, kisses and all and nothing. About that 4th day, she'll get in my face and bam! My eyes swell up, itchy, sneezy, it's awful. So I try to keep her bathed regularly so we can love on each other no prob! |

Yep.... if I don't bathe Nikko once a week after his hair starts to grow out of his regular puppy cut, I tend to break out if he tries to cuddle with me too much. This morning, we took a little nap in my bed because I didn't want to get up just yet, and I woke up with hives. But Nikko just got neutered about a week ago, and still can't have a bath for another couple of days... If he has a bath about once a week though, it's all good. Lauren & Nikko |
I have really bad allergies and asthma. So bad that I have to take albuterol before & after I even go into Petco, vets office or the groomers. That is why we got a Morkie... 50% Maltese and 50% Yorkie. I have not had any problems at all and I am the main caretaker of Max. |
I am allergic to cats but with my 2 I think I became immuned to them specifically as I would have a reaction to other cats. I never had a reaction to dogs before but sometimes when I kiss Maggie, my lips will start to itch, not always though. |
