Brushing their teeth Do you do that to your babies? and how to do it without annoying them? |
I've been trying to brush more often and have had mixed results. I've read that you should spend a couple days getting them used to you touching their teeth and gums before you introduce toothpaste. Make it like a massage and try to make it enjoyable. Good luck. Hopefully someone else will have advice. |
Mine get very annoyed, too bad for them. I've had no luck with toothbrushes so just use gauze on my finger to brush. the best position is on my lap facing away from me so when they back up to get away they run into my body. I hold the head with one hand and brush with the other. Nylon stockings instead of gauze are supposed to work well also...good luck. |
Pump some iron before starting so you're nice and strong ....and wrap them in a towel - Many yorkies turn into little Iron Men and can whip our butts when we try to brush their teeth. Chanel is 3 years old and just NOW letting me brush hers without it seeming like we having a World Wide Wrestling Competition - Cheri still kicks my butt and while I TRY to brush her teeth - I'm afraid of hurting her because she fights it so bad. I do hers AFTER a bath and it's a bit easier - she's wrapped in a towel and already feeling pitiful from the water. hehe - Yorkies are TOUGH when they don't like something :D |
:eyetearss Boy that is so true the towel idea sounds like a good idea thank you. Carol and Minnie |
Mine get really annoyed. I use a fingertip brush and its a little easier. |
Although they hate it, it is sooooo important to brush your yorkies teeth! My family officially gave up on brushing Molly's and she would just have her teeth cleaned whenever it was time at the vet, but as she got older she kept having to have more and more teeth extracted. Near the end of her life she had very few teeth, poor baby girl! So don't think that the frequent teeth cleaning at the vet is enough. I've heard that if you start brushing a puppy's teeth when they are very young and just get them used to you messing around in their mouth that it is supposed to help make it a standard deal for them. |
The gauze on my finger is what works best for me. I have bought dog toothbrushes, toddler tooth brushes...and the finger brushes.. I guess they don't mind my finger as much as the brush..... ... its a battle for sure. My aunt had a lab who almost showed her teeth while she got them brushed. She loved it. Wouldn't that be nice? |
They have a toothbrush that they "play" with and i use it when they are very tired at night before bed. I use the finget toothbrush on Ava cuz she is so little and we are still getting her used to it. There is flavored toothpaste they love and they actually like getting their teeth brushed if you are consistent. I make it lovey dovey time!! :p |
Which teeth do you brush? I only brush Trixie's front teeth, because that is all she's letting me do... |
Funny enough, Molly's back teeth were the ones they kept having to extract. She had a few front teeth come out though. She didn't start having the teeth problems until she was probably about 7 or 8. But she lived to be just a month shy of 14 years, so thats a long time to keep losing teeth! |
I brushed Gucci's teeth and she hates it, but too bad for her cause I will keep brushing them. I brush the front teeth, side teeth and back teeth. I also open her mouth and brush them inside. She absolutely hates it but i have to do it cause she still has some baby teeth over crowding her mouth and food gets stuck between them. My vet so far is waiting to see if they fall on their own if not she will pull them. I also add a tartar liquid remover to her water. SO far this has being working for us, her teeth are white and her breath is nice. Gucci loves the toothpaste, she will lick it off the toothbrush, . I also recommenf brushing the teeth of your babies even if they dont like it. Brush every side of the teeth, front and back like we do our own, not only the front teeth. Good luck. |
I started brushing Merlot's teeth when he was a baby, so he got used to it! I recommend starting with the finger one and then graduating to the regular toothbrush made for dogs. At first it was a bit akward, but he likes it now. Whenever I'm in the bathroom brushing mine he comes running to get his done! We brush the front ones and the back ones too. The back ones are a bit tougher to get too, but they are important as well. At his last Vet appt. she said he had the whitest teeth she had ever seen on a yorkie! :D |
I tried the toothbrush but they didn't like it - I think they are too young for that - 11 weeks. But I lay them on their back on my lap & do the finger brush very gently & I'm not concentrating in really cleaning them yet. I just want to get them used to something in their mouth. They love the toothpaste so I am pleased so far. |
