Would a owl, hawk, ect. really try to get a yorkie or another kind of toy dog? I have heard rumors but is it really true? It seems kinda weird when you think about a hawk picking up a dog:eek: Any stories? |
We had a thread on here about that...and yes they can. Something picked up my toy pomeranian and took it behind our house and tore it up. So be very careful if you live in an area where that could happen;) |
Yes there have been cases where a hawk has gone after yorkies or other small dogs. Please be careful. |

Absolutely!! WE know it's a dog, but the hawk or owl only sees a small animal simular to what they normally would hunt. |
Yes! These birds have been known to pick up a smaller breed dog! Much has been written on the subject. A woman had bought a yorkie from me a few years ago; she had another yorkie named Twiggy :aimeeyork. ... one morning early she let her out for potty time. Her husband heard a noise went out to see what it was about and realized to his horror that Twiggy was being "carried away" in the pinions of a large bird! He kept yelling her name and she wiggled and wiggled so much that the bird lost it grip and she dropped in a small inland lake behind their house~ He rescued her in his boat, she was shook up badly with minor scratches!! Ohhh! Were they happy to get their furbaby back.... We have alot of chicken hawks they like to circle overhead and usually go after field mice etc. One other lady told me of having her pups out of doors on a nice summer day! Litter of 6 yorkies; a hawk got 4 of them and she told me it was horrid to hear them ..... cannot say more! |
They absolutely can and do. All they see is a food source. My father-in-law was right by his small dog and a hawk swooped in and got him. |
When I get mines Im never leaving it outside to potty then. So what if im walking my yorkie would it still try to get him/her with me right there? We have so many here. I live in Ga. I know my profile says Daytona but im just going to school here and moving back to ga in the next months |
Be very careful of your babies because it can happen right in front of your eyes. A couple of YT'ers have had it happen to them. I remember reading at least two horrible stories about it and yes one was right in the yard with her pup when the hawk came and took it right up. I cried for days over that one. Please be careful and don't take chances. Your little one depends on you for it's safety. I am glad you asked so now you can be very carefull. |

me and my mom just had a convo about how i didnt like her letting bailee run offleash in our front yard for this very reason....now she believes me |
I think putting some sort of shirt, or jacket (if it's cold) on them can help disguise them a bit. I think a hawk will still drop down, even if you're walking it, but I would immediately pick up the dog if you notice one!! |
A couple of years ago we watched a hawk swoop down and grab a rabbit. We have now had one flying over and around the house for the past week off and on. It makes you nervous but you can only hope you being out with them will deter them. |
