Housetraining. Help me out I know there is a training board but I figured I mgiht get more responses here... So Chloe is doing great with tricks and stuff but we just can't get the housetraining down! I will start to think we are getting down to have accidents in the house all day the next day. Today nomatter how many times I took her outside she would not poo outside then I bring her in and not even 10 minutes later she goes in the house! Sometimes she goes to the door and we take her out so I thought we were really getting there and now this... Earlier I was doing something in my bedroom while she was on the bed and she kept jumping off and I would put her back onbecause I always like her close by...she goes pee on the bed. My fault. I should have heed the warning of her jumping off the bed but the thing is she just went not long before that so I didnt think she had to go... So I am in the process of washing the bed blanket and the sheets are still on it though. I put her on the bed and start to play with her with her toy. Telling her sit, hi-five, rollover...etc. In our mid-play she squats and pees on the sheets!!! I pick her up quickly, say NO and run her to finish outside. I just dont understand how she had to go SOO badly that she did it mid-play right in front of me! Now I am washing the sheets too! Going-mid play is what really got me because normally when she does go in the house she acts ashamed so I thought she knew it was wrong... I think the problem is her telling me when she had to go or letting me know, expecially since she goes SO often. Its just so frustrating. We take her out every hour! What can I do to make it work! |
There are TONS and TONS of threads with the same issues in the training forum. As far as I know it gets lots of traffic too - same as this forum. In fact, a lot of the time I go check there before here because I have a pup that I am housetraining at the moment as well! :) Check it out! |
Thanks! I did go browse over there but the majority of the posts seem to involve pee pads which we dont use :/ |
Hmm.. If you don't use pee pads, are you crate training? This is a good thread to browse: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...ions-help.html And you can do a search for the method you prefer! :D As well, do yourself a favour and get a few books! Housetraining for Dummies Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies Puppies for Dummies are ALL good! :D I've read, owned and loved them! lol |
This is a GREAT post from the thread I mentioned above! Quote:

I just really don't like the idea of pee pads and going inside. I think its confusing to the dog and a mess when they miss the pad or start going on throw rugs. Ultimately I want it to be where she only goes outside. I did find one post that helped...I guess its just going to take time. Yes, we do the crate method but she isnt in it nearly as much as she should be. We TRY to watch her at all times in the house and take her out VERY often but I am starting to think she needs more crate time or to be watched more closely... Thanks a bunch for finding me that post and for all the help:) |
It makes me extremely happy to see that perhaps some people are finding that post of mine helpful! Just as a quick update... my lil' boy Nikko is now just one day away from going the magical full month without any accidents. :-) He just turned 6 months old and got neutered at the end of February. :D I'm so happy we got him neutered - I can't even begin to imagine how much more difficult potty training would be if he was also marking. Lemonlauren has a lot of great ides. #6 is very helpful you need to use a leash! Also use a word like pee pee or anything you like but everyone needs to use the same word. And ask do you need to go pee pee and take them out, don't talk to them only tell them to go pee, and use the same spot. After they go then tell them how GOOD they are! and a "treat" after. I think the treat is the key (I go pee and I get a treat!) I also agree with AprilLynn unless you can't take them outside I don't think pee pads are as good as going outside. Yorkies are still dogs and it's more natural outside.(please people don't get mad) And it takes time so don't give up. Good luck ;);) |
I definately think I would have a little more results if Chloe liked treats! All I have is praise since she doesnt like any treats at all. Im lucky she eats now! lol |
Great post by lemonlauren. I agree especially with point #1. It was much, much harder to potty train Thor than I expected. I was also very surprised at how frustrated I got sometimes. Before I got down to serious potty training, Thor would sometimes have accidents and I'd clean them up, no big deal. He's a small dog, he can't do much damage. But when I was really trying and thought he "got it", only to find a spot on the rug, I had to struggle sometimes to stay calm. Once I had to put Thor in his crate because I knew I was on the verge of blowing a gasket. I totally believe that it's never the dog's fault, etc, etc, but I still got upset. Anyway, if you find yourself thinking that it's a hopeless cause, take a deep breath and know other people have been there. :) |
I don't use pee pads either. I take them out frequently. I leash both pups, when they do go I praise them so much!!!!! I'm sure my neighbors think I'm nuts. :p When I catch them inside going, I scold them and then take them outside. If I don't catch them I clean it up and don't say anything. My boy came to me pee pad trained. I put a pee pad outside and that seemed to help. He doesn't go on it anymore. My girl is 24wks old now and she hardly ever has accidents. My boy is 12wks old and he is starting to catch on. The key is knowing what they look like before they pee. Some go in circles, some sniff. They are crate trained at night. When they wake me up, I grab the leashes and leash them as I take them out of their crates. We go straight outside. Then we have scheduled potty times. About every hour, then after they eat, when they finish playing, as soon as they wake up from naps. I have had very good luck potty training these babies. I don't take my eyes off them for a minute. When I can't watch them (showering, eating, cooking) they go to their crates. You have to be consistent and persistent. They are very smart! You will have to be patient with the accidents...I have had to wash my bedding several times too. Good luck!;) |
I definately believe its not her fault when there is an accident. I even tell my husbant "It was our/my fault". She always needs to be supervised and if she has the chancre to sneak off and mess...thats my fault! Thanks so much for all the input. There is hope! Shes only 15 weeks old... |
I know you're not a fan of puppy pads, but have you ever considered litter box training your puppy? There are dog litters that are larger than cat litter, made of recycled newspaper. Instead of getting confused because of just a little pad on the floor, the litter box offers a specific area for the potty. Silvia is litter box trained, but she will also use outside whenever we let her out. It's also nice to know that you can be gone longer than usual and not have to worry about accidents. |
Not to discourage you but I have a male yorkie that was almost a year old before he was fully trained. I now have a 14 week old female and we're starting over again. You'll notice that cold or rainy weather will set you back. They don't like to go outside when it's cold or rainy. Just be patient. |
