Need advice on getting a puppy!! Hi, I am new to all of this, but I though it would be the perfect place to get some advice! I used to have 2 yorkies (a male and a female), but my boy died about a year ago and I am now thinking about getting a puppy. My girl (who is now 3) loved my boy (he was about 2 when I got her) and they were the very best of friends....so here is my question, would my little girl like having a puppy around now that she's been used to having the house to herself? Also, she doesn't like every dog she meets. In fact, she is quite picky...it seems like the dogs she's around a lot are the ones she really loves (like my sister's dog). She is very sweet and not at all aggressive; I just have a fear they wouldn't get along. I've even talked to my vet, and he said he doesn't think there will be any problem...I just wanted to get the thoughts of other yorkie owners! Thanks for your help! |
I don't think there would be a problem if you introduce them properly! There's probably going to quarrels every now and then but it just takes some getting used to! Introduce them first through a crate or through a gated room or something, and let them sniff each other and see how it goes. Then let them get together and check each other out, etc... I think you will be totally fine! |
Heck, my oldest(shih tuz, just turned 11), loves the youngest one I just got back in November. I have 4 inside ones(2 outside) when I bring a new one home, I put them on the floor, let all of them smell the new one then let them play, why I sit there and watch. Mine have never fought, nor would they be allowed to fight. It's funny, but, dogs seem to know when you bring them home which ones are staying and which ones are just visiting. If she misses the little boy, and acts like she's lonely, then, def. get another one, if she acts content being an only child, sometimes it's better to leave it at that |
can you take your little girl with you to pick out the pup? she may pick out the right one for the both of you. I have a 5 yr old maltese and when I bought my 5 mos old yorkie, it was a huge adjustment for her Lexie, my older dog. even now, 4 mos later, she just tolerates the pup. they aren't best friends like I would have liked. I went to dogage.com and my puppy is like a 4 yr old kid and my older dog is like a 19 yr old teenager. I guess when I look at it that way I can see why the older one gets tired of the younger one being in her face wanting to play. :p Looking back, I would have gotten the second dog sooner. They do get along, I don't mean to paint a negative picture. its just that Lexie was set in her ways as an only child and I upset the apple cart so to speak bringing a puppy into 'her' house. LOL As Madison is less 'puppy' they do appear to be getting along well. I did take Lexie with us when we went to look at Madison. She wasn't into any of the available dogs. But knowing what I know now I am not sure she'd like anything that meant she's gonna have to share mom and dad.:aimeeyork at least your little girl was already used to having a playmate around and that should help alot when you find the right match. Good luck. :) |
