Redleg yorkie.....ya or neigh? Would you willingly purchase a redleg yorkie from a breeder? He is 14 weeks old, price reduced due to his coat. We are going to meet him this weekend, and hopefully bring him home. Just wanted to see if any of your breeders.owners had any conflicting advice/information for me. From what I have read online (ive been researching it since we found him) and heard from the breeder he just will have a shorter/thinner coat than other yorkies (the short version). What are your honest thoughts. We had planned to keep our yorkie in the puppy cut anyhow, so the less hair thing really isnt spooking us. Are there other things I should look for when examining the puppy? Thanks in advance~ A hopeful yorkie mommy |

does he like to play with toys? Look for any discharge coming from eyes or nose. Is he well groomed and will you get to see his parents? Are they good representatives of the breed? How much does the breeder know about Yorkies? Does the health guarantee include Legge Perthes, Liver Shunt, Collapsing Trachea, Open Fontenell or Slipping Patellas? If the breeder doesnt know what these are, you might look somewhere else. These are things some I look for in a puppy. Hope he turns out to be "the one" for you!! |
eyes? regarding the eyes...is any wetness around the eye normal..in a picture of him on the breeders website (when he was about 10 weeks old) I notice what seems to be some wetness below his eyes (on almost all the puppies on the site). Please advise..And thanks so much for the tips! We will be meeting the parents, seeing where he is living/playing now...etc. |
Do you have a picture to share? |
pictures 2 Attachment(s) Here are the two pictures from the website.....honest opinions. He would be a pet, just want a healthy little guy. |
He's so cute! I think the hair underneath his eyes is probably greased to keep it from sticking up straight and completely blocking his vision. I'm going through this with Thor. Just my non-expert guess. |

He is cute and if you dont care that he could have a shorter coat I dont see how it would matter. I do wonder how a breeder could know for sure hes a redleg when his coat hasnt grown out yet to know |
It also makes the puppies more photogenic. In the pictures I take of Thor now, his face is this vast expanse of fur with a little nose in the middle. |
I'm sure a more educated person will come along but the eyes look like tearing to me. From what I read on here that is typical with yorkies. Baxter still tears and he's 14 months. Distilled water to drink has made it better but not totally corrected the situation. I don't know anything about the redleg issue. He is definitely a cutie to me. |
He is adorable and I would'nt hesitate to adopt him as long as he is healthy. Some Yorkies tear more than other's. Buddy never did however I do pick eye boogers from his eyes from time to time. If you do a search above for Redlegged Yorkies you will find other threads regarding this and hopefully feel more confident about your purchase. Good luck, I don't think your will be sorry. |
Thanks ladies...we are so excited to go pick up our baby on Saturday! |
From what I've read, breeders used to add a red legged yorkie to their breeding program to help achieve a darker coat or a better colored coat, and then tried to eliminate the fault of short hair with further breeding. I guess this isn't done so much anymore, because it's easy enough to get the better coat other ways and difficult to eliminated the shorter hair. The red leg may have been a throwback from someone else doing this. Experienced breeders should be able to identity a red leg even though its still a pup, and I say two thumbs up to the breeder because she was honest with you. Most breeders would lie about this, and the pup could end up in a home where someone was expecting a long coat. This puppy will make a wonderful pet since you prefer the puppy cut anyway. Congratulations! |
He's adorable! Thanks for sharing pics :) |
He's so cute!!!! |
He is really cute and I agree kudos to the breeder who was honest and told you he was a red leg. Honestly, I do not know but I think Sophie Kate may be a red leg. Her legs are reddish gold and her back is still completely black and her hair is does not grow fast at all (she has 4, yes 4 silver hairs on her back). She is in perfect health according to her Vet except when she decides it cool to eat bird poop and it costs me $250.00 in Vet bills to get her better. I hope when you go to visit he is everything you want and you bring him home. One of the smartest choices I ever made was getting my Yorkie. |
He is a cute little guy!!!! The best news with a red-legged is that you will save tons of money on grooming as his coat will only reach a certain length and that it is!!!!!! My Sissy definitely had red-legged blood. She is three years old and has never been groomed, except for me cutting some ragged ends. She is very easy to brush also!! Congratulations and I hope he is everything you are looking for!!! |
