Should I be worried? Ok this might sound gross, but we have a problem...I'm not sure if this is normal for puppies....We have three 5 week old puppies and when they poop it gets stuck in the anal hole and then dries....I have been cleaning it with water and then making sure everything is dry so they don't get consipated I can tell that it hurts them because they cry after it's clean the anal is swollen red and puffy....Am I doing everything I should be doing?? Is there anything I shouldn't? Any suggestions?? Are our dogs the old ones with this problem? |
Doesn't the momma dog clean their little butts after they poop? I thought they did that for them. If not, you need to be doing it and don't let it dry there, keep them clean so they don't swell up and get red and sore. |
When my princess had her litters, she always cleaned their little butts after they pooped. Like the other post said, if the momma don't do it, then you will have to clean it after every poop so it doesn't dry and get stuck. Bet they are sooo cute! |
This happened to both of my liters I guess around 5 weeks. Momma stoppped cleaning. Just use warm water once or twice a day because it will get dry and stuck... |
A few things can be going on One of my pups had a similar problem when he was younger If the hair near their anus is long it can catch some of the stool and harden so check ... if thats the case cut the area around their rear end also ...if you are feeding your pup hard food make sure they are getting plenty of water you might even want to put in some fruit or vegetable material in their food to soften their stool I came home one time to find one of my pups had pooped in his crate and it had become impacted all around his rear end probably because he was trying to get it off and it inflamed his whole rear |
She was cleaning their bottoms but right at 5 weeks she stopped just like what happend to you...I have been using warm water and making sure their bottoms are dry.... Quote:

My husband and I actually shaved their bottoms with some clippers and it looks like that has helped out alot because it was getting stuck to their hair....I'm feeding them baby cereal, baby dog milk and wet dog food mixed in, but I have noticed they hardly ever drink the water we have set out for them....is there anything else I can put out there so they will drink? And what kind of fruit/vegetable material do I put in their food? Quote:
