My yorkie doesn't like his collar Hello everyone, I have a question. We just got my puppy a collar with a dog tag and it seems like he is not comfortable with it. When he walks he scratches his neck because the colar bothers him. I assume he should get used to it but I feel bad:( Do you only put the collar when you go outside or should I leave him with it so he can get used to it? Thanks!:animal-pa |

Someone just posted a little while ago about their Yorkie choking on their collar when it got caught in their month.:( |
I keep a collar on Jackson all day in the house just because he's in and out so much and we have no fence on 3 acres of land. He's also a bit bigger for a Yorkie (9 pounds at 5months) and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. I will take it off if I'm leaving him in the house by himself for longer periods of time than an hour or two. Your pup will probably get used to it. |

Sapphire didn't like her collar at first. She got used to it though. :) I only put it on when we go out though. Just for her tags. I have her in a harness, but the collar has the tags. :) |
Well.. if your using it for ID purposes, then maybe it might take him some getting use to. Maybe you can try a different material... Or even attach his tags to a harness and see if he does better with that. However, I would not be attaching his leash to his collar for walks. Its best to use a harness so that it's not pulling at his neck. These little guys are so small, that its a fragile area. Hope this helps :) |
Missy doesn't even own a collar. Step-in harness only for her. These little ones necks are far too delicate for a collar, particularly if you are attaching a leash. I'd never forgive myself if Missy ended up with a collapsed trachea because of a collar. |
I keep a collar and tags on my Yorkie at all times. I never walk her by her collar I use a harness, but leave her collar and tags on. My pets got used to wearing a collar and when I give them baths they come to me to put it back on. Guess they feel naked without it after awhile. |
have you tried a harness? with their sensitive tracheas. We do have to be careful with collars |
