Swimming? I just got my first yorkie, Cleo, a few weeks ago (now 14 weeks). I have 2 big dogs (40 and 100lbs) who love to swim and lounge in the pool. Cleo has been curious, walking around and looking in (of course with mommy close by) so i was wondering if yorkies can swim, and if so do they have to be 'taught' or is it natural? I haven't tested it out b/c it has been a little chilly out and i don't want her to get sick or develop a fear of the pool or ocean. |
They can swim but its best that they have a life jacket on. They dont have the longer legs or the stamina of a bigger dog |

Of course they can swim!!! :) Of the 3 yorkies in my family (2 are my parents') only 1 LOVES it. The other two don't really care about it. |
My neighbor has a pool and I took the Yorkies over, the first thing Lola did was DIVE into that pool. I grabbed her and SPLASH she went in again...She loves the pool. Manolo likes to look swank. "OH no, Water not me....My hair will get messy". You need to keep an eye on them at all times because I agree with Chachi, they have short little legs |
Since Yorkies are filled with love and kisses they'll float, right? :tinyheart So it doesn't matter if they have short legs, all their kisses will keep them afloat. Just don't let them swim for 30 minutes after they shower you with kisses or they might sink. :p |
Princess that she is, Molly prefers to have me push her around while she floats on a kick board. HA! |
I would also be very careful if your little one has long hair as it can weight the dog down. I know of 2 yorkies that drowned, one because of the hair and the other fell in the pool and could not get out and no one was home to help. Very sad. |
Sadly, I also know of a yorkie that drowned. The family had a pool for eleven years, and the yorkie never showed any interest in swimming. Then one day, they discovered the poor doggie in the pool. That being said, I have a little life jacket for Thor, and I'm definitely going to take him to the beach and see how he likes it. |
I think it depends on the dog. Some love the water, and some hate it. |
I got Jackson in December so obviously the pool in my dads backyard has been closed. But I'm anxious to try it out and see if he likes it! I have a feeling he will, but who knows. He loves outdoors in general and the snow, he doesn't mind the rain, he doesn't mind baths, so I think he'll really enjoy himself! |
We have a pond - Bailey constantly circles the pond and chases the frogs. One day she fell in  I was there and helped her right out. I couldn't help but laugh at her - she didnt think it was very funny. The next day hubby and I gave her swim lessons - yeah, she can swim, but prefers not to. |
I too wanted to try to see if Duke can swim in the bath tub the other night too. |
