Beware! Yorkies and Owls Has anyone had experience with wildlife going after their babies? The other night, I let my 5 month old out the back to go to the potty. Our yard is completely fenced in with 6 foot high wood fence. It was cold and I stood in the door to watch her. She stayed by the storm door and put her front feet on the glass as if to say, "please mommy let me in." I opened the door and pushed her back while I got out the door, just then I heard something overhead and looked up to see a huge wing go over my head. It went on top of my fireplace stack on the roof and stared down at me. I thought it was a hawk but I was told it was an owl if at night. :eek: Now I am petrified to let my girls outside, I live in a subdivision and these birds must be desperate if they are looking for food here. Poor baby, she must have known something was out there. |
Oh my! How scary! :eek: I wonder if there is anything you can do to scare away Owls! I'm always paranoid about Hawks, now I have to worry about Owls too? Glad your baby is ok! |

I would take them out on a leash and harness. I have heard several instances of Yorkies being snatched up by owls, hawks, and coyotes! |
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL... we live on a conservation area and there are all kinds of creatures that can easily carry off or kill our babies. ALWAYS GO OUT with them if you have seen any big bird activity day or night. I have seen big RedTailHawks sitting on our 6ft fence like they were just waiting for us to let one of them out. I never let them out if I see any birds around or if there are any snakes in the yard. BE Ever so cautious...... sure don't want to loose a baby they are to precious to us.. |
My husband wants to get a beebee gun. Knowing his luck, he would kill someone or shoot out the neighbors windows. I don't think there is really anything we can do, I think the bunny babies are coming out and they are looking to snatch them. They don't know the difference between a dog, a rat, or a bunny. You just know I don't let either girl out alone. I heard a screeching the other night and swore it was still around. :mad: |

Yorkies and Owls We. only take Tucker outside with his leash and harness. Of course, he is pad trained, and we only have one. Today was the first time he actually urinated while on a walk. I bought a Yorkie book before we got him, and it warned about hawks, but owls go after the same things hawks do |
We have had a hawk swoop down close to us a couple of times and it was scary. I was wondering if putting a bright neon orange jacket on them or a blinking scarf would keep the bird from recognizing them as prey. Does anyone have any ideas on this? |

OH WOW!! Be ever so careful. Please always go outside with your babies. I try to use a piddle pad for those times when I cant go outside. We live on the very edge of a national forest. I have seen red tail hawks flying in a pattern over every back yard in the neighborhood. (smart hunters) I guess if they have no luck hunting in the hills they move down to our homes. Nothing is more scary than being outside and see a hawk shadow on the lawn. We also have had coyotes and fox and deer. I feel like I live in a frackin zoo sometimes!! Today we had 2 mallard ducks land in the pool! Where on earth did they come from??? LOL Wow I am venting now! Last thing. . . One night my son came home and said he saw a big old deer in the road. Mind you we live in the city. I told him to lay off the booze!(joke) A week later I saw the same deer. It was large with full antlers, it looked so out of place. |
owls Oh, yes, pleeeeaaassee be careful of owls, and hawks. There was a small yorkie near me that was killed by a hawk's talons. Alot of yorkies are the size of rabbits, and the hawks and owls just see them as a source of food. I NEVER let my babies out unless I am with them at all times. Trust me, these birds can and will kill these little dogs! |
I was shocked the other night to see an owl in my backyard. I let 2 of my babies out and as they ran out the door, I saw a "larger than normal" bird fly up to a low tree limb. I wonder if it had been on the ground, not sure. Anyway, the limb was bare & I could see it sitting there. I walked quickley out to get the dogs (still not sure what kind of bird it was). I was able to get close enough to the tree to see that it was indeed an owl, though not a very big one. It was about the size of my yorkies or smaller; kind of greyish/white in color????? We looked at each other for a few seconds, then I picked up my "kids", took them inside, and went back out with my camera hoping to get a picture. I got about half way up to it this time and it flew off. Darn! Anybody have a clue as to what type of owl it was? I don't know much about them, but it didn't look big enough to pick up one of my babies. Doesn't stop me from being more watchful when I let them out though. I never let them out without being with them or keeping a close eye on them. |
I was rocking Rocky last fall, and and owl screeched and swooped down on Rocky. I was standing waiting for Rocky to finish pottying and saw the owl come off the top of a roof across the street. I screemed, I dont know if it sent the owl off target or not. But thank God for the leash and harness. |
Kim, just a heads up in case you don't know. In some states owls are protected and there is a huge fine (very huge) for killing them and even some possible jail time. Better check out the laws about them before your husband gets himself in a mess...many owls are a protected (endangered)species. (If your husband is like mine, he was probably kidding but I'm sure he wants to protect his family.) |
Last summer there was an owl that would come every night and sit on my fence. I think it was waiting for my yorkies. It got to where i couldnt even let them out to go potty. I have always heard that even though your with them, the owls will still come down and try to get little dogs. I have 4 yorkies so i dont know if i could grab all 4 of them in time or not so now i just let them go potty on my screened in porch. Better safe than sorry. Glad your baby is ok, please be careful! |

The other day I saw these large Wings on the ground tumbling then I saw a rabbit underneath. It was a hawk attacking a Large rabbit. It carried it off to a curb and started eating it. This was right in front of me and the Hawk did not move and was not scared. Yes they will eat our babies so please be careful and dont leave these little guys outside very long. |

We live in the woods...and for awhile the hawks would get our chickens....didn't care if we were out there or not...we have turkeys, deer, fox, hawks, all though I 've never seen an owl...I am sure we have them... My babies only go out with me...so they will have to take me first... lol |
This happened years ago but it still spooks me: I had a tiny maltese that I always took outside on a leash, we were outside waiting for her to finish going potty, I just happened to look up at a low branch on a VERY close tree and there was this huge gray bird on it. The bird looked at my dog, dropped a headless rat to the ground and appeared to be focusing on my poor innocent little dog! I screamed and picked her up quickly but my being there didn't seem to have any effect on the bird. That scared me the most! |
Beware Yorkie's and Owls We have had red tailed hawks perching in our taller trees in the back all winter. They hung around because the heavy snow cover made it difficult for them to find food. Also, I was feeding suet to the birds, and they will sit and monitor feeders. I found that out from a conservation officer who rehabilitates birds. Needless to say, I won't do that anymore. However, please DO NOT SHOOT OWLS or HAWKS. They are beautiful birds, and have enough to deal with. Loss of habitat, pollution, cars running into them. Yahoo's who capture them and try to keep them as pets. They are just trying to survive and feed their young. They have a high mortality rate in nature. Please keep a close eye on your dogs when you let them out, and remember birds are just doing what God intended them to do. Periwinkle |
