Yorkie's ears My Veer will be 4 months old on the 9th. I need to know is the ears will it be up by itself / do we need to tape it / is it normal for the ear drops back down? His ear was standing but now it is falling back down and stands sometimes. The hair on tip of ears is shaved. After how many months does it stand back up for good?:animal-pa |
I am not really sure? Taping may help, you could try it for a while and see. I think that when they get to a certain age it may be harder to train it to stay up. When my large breed dog was a puppy my other puppy always bit on her ear and now it is always floppy, but I have no idea what the correct answer is for you. I don't think it would hurt to try. |
I have an excellent website for you to read about the ears. I have also read that while they are teething it is common for their ears to be floppy. I do not remember ever having trouble with my older yorkie (she is 11) but my 5 month old will have days when they are floppy and days they stand up. The larger the ear, the harder it is to stand up. I have taped my little ones ears, they stood up for a while but are starting to flop. So I am not an expert. Take a look at this site, she has info on lots of topics: Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand) Good Luck! :D |
Ears When they are teething, it is not unusual for the ears to be floppy - this should stop by 6 months. Under a year is the best time to tape a yorkie's ears. After that, it is iffy (really, under 6 months is best). If you are really worried about the ears standing, you can tape them even if they are standing up, just to make sure they will continue to stand. However, keep in mind that there are risks in taping (irritation, ear infection, reaction to the tape or adhesive, taping too tight and cutting off circulation to the ears, damaging the hair, etc). If they are standing up, I'd leave it alone. : ) My suggestion is to keep the hair on the ears shaved and trimmed for at least the first 8 months to a year, just to keep the extra weight off of them. That should be enough to keep them standing up. |
update for riley hi there my puppy just had her first birthday!!!:aimeeyork her dad didn't think he would like the tips shaved.. so she didn't end up getting them down until the second grooming...7mos her ears where pretty floppy(my little yoda), most of the time but. she is now one. and they have been up lately..she has just lost most of the double toofies(lol) so i think that they can still pick up eventually, even after 6 mos. but i am sure that alot of them have many differences...so just a little hope that they will pick up!!! doesn't really matter because, aren't they just adorably cute!!!:animal-pa:animal-pa |
1 Attachment(s) My Bailee has floppy ears. Her's never did stand. We had the groomer shave the hair off her ears and everything, but her ears just didn't cooperate. I never tried the taping thing. Just figured if they were meant to stand they would.... Of course, I still think she is just the cutest thing ever, floppy ears and all (but I am biased) :D Here is a pic of my Bailee. Our Yorkie is 13 weeks, and her ears don't look remotely close to standing. The vet told me this week that she really thinks they will stand at some point. But, honestly, it is not a huge issue for me. I would like them to stand since Yorkie's are 'supposed' to have ears that stand. But, in the scheme of life, it is very minor. I don't have a problem if people choose to tape their dog's ears; it's just not something I personally am comfortable with for our Yorkie. |
I just have a random question, should they have their ears up?? is it a health issue of any kind..my baby is just 3 months so i am not really concern right know but does it matter if they stay down or up?? i just want to make sure she will be as healthy as can be...sorry if its a dumn question i didnt know this was a concern since i never went through this before? let me know thanks!! |
I honestly don't know if it's a health concern or not. I would love to know as well though since Bailee's ears don't stand up. |
It's not a health issue; it is a breed standard. So, unless you plan to show your Yorkie, it's no big deal. |
oh ok i understand thanks...now i am ok with her ears the ay they are...lol :) |

Thanks so much for clarifying for me too. I was starting to worry a little, lol :) |
I understand both of you completely. I do want our Yorkie's ears to stand just because Yorkie's ears are supposed to stand. But, it's nothing I am going to worry about. Our vet told me that the vast majority of Yorkie's ears will stand eventually, whether taped or not. So, we are just going to wait and see. :) |
Simon had floppy ears when I got him, he had never been groomed. He's 2 1/2, and I just had his ears trimmed, and his ears now stand up. Everyone said they wouldn't because of his age, but they sure do stand up now. |
it is just for looks...just makes them look more alert, lol either way up or down, it gives them character...but by experience, and other posts, teething can affect the ears from standing up. riley has just about lost all of her double teeth, and her ears r standing up alot more often...she just turned one a week ago...we didn't get her tips shaved right away either...i think that would help....i just called her my little yoda, and said her floppy ears were lazy, lol depends on them using there muscles or not...i whistle to get a reaction, if i want her to lift up them ... :aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa |
