Need some advice
 
hello. we have a 3 and a half year old french bulldog. he has a very strong personality. we were out last weekend and ended up adopting a yorkie mix dog. we are not sure how old he is but we were told he is possibly between 1 and 5. they dont seem to be warming up to eachother that well, but it has only been a week. Dash, our new yorkie barks alot and has been peeing in the apartment and even on our couch. Today he actually showed his teeth at my boyfriend and did it a few times. does anyone have any advice? could it be possible they will never be friends :(. we just want them both to be happy.

Are the dogs neutered? If not, this may help.

It takes time. Give it at least one month.

Have they both been neutered, I've read that that helps. I know that you treat the dog that has been in the house the longest as the Alpha, and do things like placing his food bowl down first. Most trainers will suggest that you make both dogs sit and stay before placing the bowl down. It takes some time to get them use to each other, and it sounds like Dash is marking his territory. Some people say that dogs do better if they meet the first time in a park or neutral area, but I guess it's too late for that. I guess I would be fearful if there is a large difference in size, but from what I've read, dogs have a way of working things out.

Get them outside in a open area frequently. Let them associate with each other naturally, i.e., don't force the situation & be patient. Set one month as a goal for socialization.

Take them for walks together.

You should get a urinalysis for Dash to check for a urinary tract infection. Probably behavioral though. A belly band might help.

I would definately consider belly bands for his potty issues....and like others have said taking them on walks together is one of the easiest ways for dogs to get to know each other....and realize that YOU are pack leader...not the "bulldog"...or the newest pack member.....

And it will definately take time....a week is not enough...GOOD LUCK!!! :D

I probably should have made it clear that humans are always the pack leader, but the dog that has been their the longest should be treated as the alpha dog.
