Affraid of stairs :( Harley my 6 moth old Peekapoo won't even try to attemp my stairs. He runs after Aiden all day,but if Aiden and Pongo go upstairs to our second floor Harley stops dead. He'll go up my front porch and back deck steps but there is only 1-3 seps. My stairs inside are about 30. I tried helping him one step at a time..nothing. I've put him in his harness and tried pulling him up..not happening..He also runs away when you go to get him...lol...it's cute...to a point...then it's frustrating:mad:He just looks at me and whines nonstop to be rescued. My urgent concern is,tomarrow my husband has to have major shoulder surgery, and I know he'll try to keep picking the lazy boy up. Not good for him to do...AT ALL...HELP!!!! ANY IDEAS??? SUGGESTIONS ???Thanks in advance:D Melissa:animal-pa |
My Maltese, Nash, was afraid of our stairs at our last house: the treads were not enclosed, just wood planks set on risers at the outside of the planks. He could see through the stairs and they terrified him. In this house the stairs are fully enclosed and tiled and he races up and down them. Is there anything about those stairs, physically, that could be frightening him? Have you tried putting a treat about three steps up and just leaving him to get it himself? We discovered tonight that Puddin' is wild about peanut butter (Hubby is calling her the Peanut Butter Bandit!) and if the stairs become a problem, I can see myself putting treats with peanut butter on them every three steps or so to lure her up. Good luck! I hope you find something that works! |
I just went thru this with my little boo, He would not come down the basement stairs for nothing, The he would sit and bark because the rest of us are down there  I practiced with him for about an hr, I went down one step at a time with him, I did the treats and it worked ! He wouldnt go back up though  So we started over again and you should see him now  He is the first one down and the first one up :p Good luck he will catch on :) |
my 2 year old yorkie won't go down stairs. it really isnt a big deal. I just carry her when she needs to go outside. |
I have a maltese at home (in addition to my yorkie baby) who sometimes won't go up the stairs. Our stairs have a wooden step on the bottom which has deterred her from attemting the climb. She'll come down the stairs but then stops at the wooden step and whines for someone to help her all the way down. I'm thinking she's probably at one point in time slipped on the step before and is afraid it'll happen again. I've enticed with treats before and it does help, but it hasn't cured her. |
Aw I'm sure he will get it. Those steps are intimidating to a little guy. They are soooo high! He is soooo little. What if you just put him a few steps down from the top maybe 3-4. Will he go up then? If he does then do that for a while just add another step down after a while. A little at a time might work to build up his confidence. It's worth a try. |
I would do the treats on the stairs as well. It will also work for getting him to come to you, I walked around the house with Jazzies food bowl and said, come Jazzie, she followed me and learned to come. You can also call them, when they come, give a treat, next time they WILL remember to come, ;). Good luck. |
