In reading the many posts I have encountered terminology which does not appear to exist anywhere in breed standard description so I'm wondering where these terms originated and just what do they mean.

cotton or silky coat - breed standard does not mention anything about cotton

wirehaired - this is one I've never heard anywhere but on this forum and would question whether any yorkie with "wirehair" was a purebred.

red yorkie - again a colour description which doesn't appear anywhere except here.

Are any of these terms accepted by AKC or CKC?

As a yorkie owner for more than 25 years I find these terms confusing and can only imagine how a new yorkie owner would feel let alone someone looking for information before they purchase a yorkie.

Thoughts?

A silky coat is what the standard is asking for . The standard ask for a dark steel blue coat ( not a silver blue ) .

Cottony , wooly and wirehaired are major faults , if showing .

Blue , red and chocolate are genetic's faults .

I admit that I was confused the first time that I was looking for a Yorkies .

Thank you for the response and explanation. I know what the breed standard is and have purchased yorkies from Germany, Canada, USA and England. The terms used on this forum don't appear anywhere else that I am aware of and I was wondering where they came from and why are they used here? From my perspective it just confuses the issue.

What is the description of a "cotton" coat?

All of my yorkies have had the same hair with slight variations of colour so I've no idea what "cotton" means or how to look for it.

All these terms you will not find in the standard as they are faults. But surely they are out there and very true. The standard description is for what an ideal yorkie should look like. It doesn't mention faults as these are traits that shouldn't be present in the breed.

A cotton coat is thick hair that sometimes is curly that matts easily.

A cottony coat is coarse and wavy , when you touch the hair , it's like cotton

Your welcome! I have one dog that has a cotton coat and one that has a silk coat. You can really tell the difference when grooming them.
