New to YT and have 8yr old who constantly barks Hiya all, hope you are all well and can help. I have a lively 8 yr old who constantly barks and begs, he has adapted to my 18month old pretty well but i am expecting my second child due in May and am starting to wonder how i am going to cope. I keep my 18 month old and Sparky (the dog) seperated most of the time and just introduce sessions of interaction as my dog is contantly begging at my sons feet which he naturally feeds him as he thinks its is a game i correct my son and the dog but seem to fighting a losing battle so they end up getting seperated, also my dog constantly barks at the slightest noise which is disturbing to the point my 18 month old son tell him to be quiet and shows him the door. Sparky has always been a vocal dog since he was a puppy but he has got so bad i am having to concider re housing him as he is now disturbing my sons sleep and routine and i am worried that when my second child arrives that as he barks so much he will disturb the new baby as well and will end up being shut in seperate rooms that much that things could get nasty. Any ideas on how i can calm or stop some of the barking. |
Walks? Is it just that he has tons of energy to work off too. Do you have a doggy daycare around that might help or maybe hire a dog walker since your condition and having a little boy too. Wow, sorry wish I lived by you to help you with him. Sorry if it's not much help. Welcome to YT and I'm sure someone will have a suggestion that will help you out. Please, keep us posted. |
It is sad that you would consider rehoming an 8 yr old dog because you now have children. That should have been taken into consideration before you got the dog. For the barking try shaking a can with coins in it and say no bark |
Hiya...sorry to hear you are having problems with your yorkie. How much exercise does he get each day? I walk Molly for about an hour and a half a day, split into 2 walks usually. If i have to miss a day, or can only take her for a half hour walk, she is much more vocal than if she has had a good run across the fields. |
Hi I don't want to get rid of him just cus of the children there are more personal issues as well and i just don't think it is fair for him to be shut away like he is being. He rarely gets walked as he has never been the dog to go for a walk and i have to drag him out i have a big garden and has always preferred to go out there for a run he not that interested no matter how many times he is offered a walk so it has just got into a routine that he doesn't go for walks everyday. |
I see. If he is shut away all the time maybe it would be the best thing to rehome him though in most cases I would hate to hear of an 8 yr old dog being rehomed. I agree he also needs exercized. |
welcome to YT. Have you consulted a trainer about the barking? I wonder if he is getting enough attention ?? - perhaps this is why he is barking - he wants to spend more time with everyone, so he barks for attn. Did he always bark like this? |
