short hair/long hair? Okay...we have a new yokie in the house. My daughter's. Does all yorkie's hair grow long? I have seem the pics with long hair on the ears. and long hair that almost touches the floor. Just wondering. Monica |
Most yorkies can grow a long coat. There are some that cant though and its just in their genetics |
You can also choose to keep their coat short if it is easier. I kept Hot Rod short last summer and let it grow out from July for the winter. I am going to give him a puppy cut when the weather warms up for the summer again. I plan on keeping his face and beard long though. I am going to do the same with Maggie although she's a bit behind Hot Rod as she is only 9 mos old. |
It's all about what's easiest for you.Some people can't handle all of the grooming. |
We have thrown around the thoughts of getting "puupy cuts" for awhile. Fortunately my hubby helps with Shelby & Seymour's daily grooming so it is easier with 2 people. So for now Shelbs & Sey will keep their long locks. As chachi says, it depends on the genetics..... and also a good healthy diet. Some Yorkies have a cottony coat which can be a bit more difficult to groom and keep long (like Shelby). We also have some favorite grooming products that I think help. Chris Christensen has some wonderful brushes and combs that are very gentle, but work well. Good Luck.... whatever works best for you!!! ..... there are some ADORABLE puppy cuts out there!! |

I'm kind of doing a short to medium hair length with Barley. With it being longer on his face & ears. However, I do love the long hair! I just don't have the skills yet for keeping it. From what I've seen you need to condition it and use spray on conditioners and roll it up when they eat. But I maybe wrong. I'm still learning myself. You have any pictures? |

1 Attachment(s) I plan on always keeping Nikko's hair cut short in a puppy cut... I think he looks super cute in it, and I think it'll make us both happier in the long run. He won't get twigs and stuff tangled in it from being outside, and I can spend more time playing with him instead of forever trying to keep him brushed. Nevertheless, I understand why some people like the long hair, and both dog and owner can learn to enjoy grooming time as special one-on-one time together as well. And yorkies are just cute either way - long hair or short... or medium! Here's my boy after his first haircut, nice and short... sorry, just have to show him off. I very much prefer long hair for yorkies, but I can understand people keeping the hair short if they can't keep up with the grooming. One of my yorkies has a coarser coat and it doesn't grow well so hers is a medium length, but my other has a soft coat and I've been growing his hair out since I got him a year and a half ago. |
