Welcome to YT. Yorkies are great. Start by reading through the FAQs while waiting for replies. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...tions-faq.html |
Welcome. Do a lot of research and reading on here. We have many great breeders on here. The standard is under 7 lbs I believe but some stay pretty small and they may need special care, ie someone home a lot especially in the puppy stage, careful to not step on them, low sugar (hypoglycemia). Make sure you are dealing with a reputable breeder who has a good health gurantee. They are sometimes hard to housebreak, but give so much joy and love. |
You found the perfect place for all your answers!!! Welcome to YT!!!! |
:welcome4: :yorkietal Welcome to YorkieTalk :yorkietal :welcome4: Congratulations to you on wanting to do your research before buying a Yorkie. I would suggest that you start by making a list questions that you want answered and use the search function and start reading :D . Once you get a good feel for what Yorkies are all about and the concerns that most of us have, you can start making a list of specific questions to ask. I hope this doesn't sound mean - I just know that there is a plethora of information here at YT about almost any subject regarding yorkies that you can think of -- and many that you would never dream of asking. I am afraid that if you just read the replies to your thread, then you will be missing a wealth of information. Again, congratulations on your wise decision to educate yourself, and happy reading! |
Get ready to fall absolutely, completely in love. Once you own a yorkie....you will forever be owned by one. |
Do your research. And realize that Yorkies require alot of care. They are not disposable pets, and they're not all perfect all the time. Don't worry about finding the right one, the right one will find you. But do know, that once you hold that beautiful little darlin', you're never want to let it go.:) |

Welcome to YT!!! What a great choice you have made...Yorkie's are the best!!! |
Hi there and welcome to YT ! I commend you for doing your homework before bringing home a Yorkie. they are wonderful animals , however require a tremendous amount of love and care. Be certain that you are able to spend as much time possible with your new baby. Make sure you know the basics first. LIke, A Yorkie Puppy should be brought home no less then 12 weeks old .And to buy from a reputable breeder. KNow about health issues and possible complications that may arise in a Yorkie. Be aware that no two Yorkies are the same. they have their own temperments. They are smart, and known to be hard to potty train. Males are notorius leg lifters. They are high energy and small. They do better with older kids and adults because of their size and fraility. However children can be taught how to handle a Yorkie. These little guys want to be with their humans the most and love to play, run around, and be silly. Be sure you have a clear reason as to why you want to bring a Yorkie into your home and be prepared for many human baby characteristics. They are very time consuming in there care. There grooming, feeding and demanding little dogs. Extremely loyal and energetic dogs. But require great care and attention all the time. |
I never had a yorkie before chester and I love this dog more than life itself. They can be a burger to pottytrain, small ones can have low blood sugar, can be stepped on or jump off of stuff, not good for their knees. Chester is 9.3 bigger than some but not fat. They do not like to be left alone, they love being around their family. Alot of yorkies can have allergies and sensitive skin. You can feed them good food and it is not exspensive to feed them. THey need to be socialized well and they are very smart and can be very stubborn, they will have you wrapped trust me. I would die if anything happesn to chester, I take him everywhere almost with me, road trips and everything. |
One more thing they are great watch dogs, they are very watchful and noisey, they will alert you if something is not right. |
mscat, you are spot on. Everything you said is so true. They are a wonderful breed. I have had 3 in the last 30 years. My first one, Misty, lived to be 16. What a sweetheart she was. My second one, Kayla, lived to be almost 14. She was so tiny (runt of the litter). She was the light of my life. I lost her last July 15th and still miss her so much. She really tugged at my heartstrings. My newest one, Abby, is 6 months old and such a tomboy. Just the complete opposite of Kayla. Yorkies are such a great breed! |
