Question about breeding.... Hi to all, I have a beautiful little boy named Gucci!! He is the cutest little Yorkie, and he is soooooo sweet. He just turned 7 months and I was thinking of getting him fixed, BUT my neighbor suggested I breed him a bit, maybe when he turns one. She, herself is a breeder, of Dobermans though. I asked her about my Gucci and she said I can breed him and get a stud fee. I know I can never have the puppy here, I would end up keeping the little thing!;) And hubby is a no no on that one. My question is I guess to the breeders: How would I even go about this. I wouldn't want to just pair him with any girl Yorkie, and I wouldn't even know where to find a mate. So where and how do I begin, If I wanted to do this? |
You do know that if you breed him it will most likely bring out undesirable behaviors like marking in your house? |
No, I did not know that...what else do I need to know? |
You can also eliminate his risk of getting testicular cancer if he gets neutered. Also unneutered males can roam or become agressive |
I knew about the testicular cancer and the roaming. I am going to neuter him eventually, I just thought we would try this first. He is so good, and so sweet, he would make great little pups. But like I said, I would need to find a good mate. I am also reluctant to neuter right away. We have a German Shepard and we got him fixed as soon as the vet said it was ok. This poor dog had such a bad experience with it. He got an infection, and was sick from the anesthesia. I just am not looking to neuter my baby anytime soon. But I know it is the best thing for him in the long run. I just would like to try breeding him, I know HE will like it, and he is the male, so I would not need a place for the pups , or worry about my Shepard stepping on the babies, which was a great worry when i got Gucci, he was soooooo tiny and Bugsy, my Shepard is so BIG! So any more advice is greatly appreciated. |
Ok, let me give you a little hint of what its like having an unaltered male Yorkie verses an altered...I have both..I have a cutie little 5# stud that I decided to use for breeding and to stud out for fees..well unless you have a show worthy stud and I mean that has been proven in the ring with a CH before his name...the thought of ppl wanting him as a stud and paying a fee doesn't happen often..We used ours in our very small breeding program. Its not because Yogi's not just adorable. he is.;) He has a beautiful silk coat, he's small framed, short nose, well set ears and a great temperament....its just there are alot of male Yorkies out there, and most small breeders, use their own studs, unless the situation is what I mentioned above.....now on a daily basis here in the house..I mop every single day and within 2 hrs of mopping my hardwood floors, I can walk through now and see at least 3 corners of furniture ect. that Yogi has walked by and marked..when other dogs come over (my daughter has 2 Yorkies) he will mark about 5-6 things outside of his normal spots..he walks by our other male when he's eating, sleeping, whatever he's doing and hikes his leg and marks him!!! Shoes laying around..get marked..Do you get my picture?? When our female comes into heat or any female he is around..he is literally nuts with adrenaline for 7-8 days...whinning all night, marking increases..pawing at the door and panting nonstop..Now his behavior isn't abnormal for an unaltered male..its perfectly normal, but it is what it is....You can decide to keep your little guy intact, but this is what your life will be like....;) I just want you to make an informed decision...Good luck! I think you just talked me out of it! LOL That is alot to take into consideration! I definitely do NOT want any marking. I just got him 90% housebroken, I cannot have him going backwards. He is so good now, that would be a shame. That really makes me lean toward not breeding him and getting him neutered. Though I am looking at him now, staring at me like he knows I am talking about him, and he is so cute, he would make beautiful babies. He is 6 lbs, with a tan face and black/dark silver coat. He just got groomed today and has his first bow in his hair! So cute. But I have alot to think about now, though i am leaning more toward not studding him. But thanks so much for taking the time to write all that and inform me of the downside. I really appreciate it! |

Please dont use him for breeding just because he is cute and would enjoy it! There are way too many pups out there already. |
