umm I am married, with 3 kids and I still feel the pain of cost. I took Chino in to my vet and he charged me $117 just for a health check. I asked afterwards why so high, they informed me that they built a new place so they have to raise their prices............I did not ask them to become money hungry, they are the ones that decided to open up a second place. I took his medical records that day and still have them with me since I have no idea who I will use. Great doctor, but I refuse to pay such high fees for something they decided. |
Two weeks ago I threw the back door open to let Maya in after pooty and the door clipped her paw. I saw blood (which stopped when I applied pressure), but she was favoring the paw, so off to the doc we went. The little place was so small he had to put on magnifying goggles to see it, told me it would "heal" eventually (duh), gave her an anitbiotic shot (was that REALLY necessary?), and sent me on my way.....cost..89.00. Probably my fault for even running over there, but that is an example of what I mean.:( |

We often take our dogs to the vets to insure nothing serious is going on, the vet has to charge something just for his time to do the check-up. Some of the time, it will be nothing serious, and the trip will seem like a "waste", but isn't that better than neglecting something that is more serious? If your little girl developed an infection afterwards, you would have been very angry the vet hadn't done more, the antibiotic shot prevented any infection from growing. Remember cuts that bleed little are more likely to become infected than those that bleed profusely. |

My poor son is trying to find affordable vet care for his yorkie in Tampa. I feel for him because he just starting working full time and funds are tight. The prices are twice or three times higher than what we pay in our little rural, small town. Our vet did not even charge for the office visit, just the shots, meds, or tests. |
Single educated pet owner - who has stayed in a job that pays too little for too long - but hey - the company is going to help me - tell me to take a week off without pay this quarter, and oh, probably next quarter too - and yep, more layoffs on the way - so I struggle too, but part of pet ownership is this. But it scares me for the big costly things, and then you hear about all the furbabies with liver shunt and other health problems and the expensive surgeries. As far as the anal glands - first do not wait on this one. Bubba's burst a few yrs ago - and he hadn't been scooting & I didn't have any sign he was having problems - this is serious and not something to wait on. But if you haven't tried pure canned pumpkin go buy some - it will cost about $1. Don't buy the spiced pumpkin pie stuff though. The pure pumpkin may help her and release everything pretty quickly |
Its gross and smelly but I say learn to squeeze anal glands. It will save you money and time. You don't have to do it all the time just when you notice scooting. Tanj has anal issues sometime and off to the bathroom we go. 10 mins later all is well and the only money I spent was for the toilet tissue and soap I used. ;) |
Ohhh, I feel your pain :( We are a family of 5, living on just my husbands wage. Two weeks ago I borrowed 3,500 off of my Mom to pay for Missy's emergency leg surgery (doing 500-1000 pymt each month), and now the vet wants to do follow up xrays, her spay by laser, microchip, and any tooth extractions she may need. I just phoned for a quote because of your post, and it is $513 for just the laser spay and microchip. I will have to pay for 2-4 xray views on top of that (they are phoning me back to tell me how much that is), and any teeth that need to be extracted (minors are 22, and majors are 53). Plus 12% tax of course. It's very overwhelming having to dish out so much cash after just buying her in November, and then doing all the shots and buying her supplies. |
