Any tips for a newbie puppy owner?? Only 4 more weeks until my little yorkie comes home!!! :animal36 :D :D I'm so excited - and a little anxious too. This will be my first dog ever (I've only had a cat prior to this). I grew up with dogs - but we lived in the country so they were large breed dogs and lived outside. My question for all you Yorkie owners out there is.... What one piece of advice can you give a newbie that you wish someone had told you before your furbaby came home? Thanks for any advice you can offer!!! :thumbs up |
Prepare Prepare Prepare .... Make sure you have the food he needs the toys the blankets the Crate or the Xpen that he'll be sleeping in and finally a Vet that you will be taking him to for his shots |
Thanks! I've got all the necessities and some things just for fun.... ie:a tiara barette, pink couch, pink toys, etc! All you Yorkie spoilers know what I mean ;) I've also found a great Vet and already made an appt. Thanks so much for the advice! I'm trying to soak in as much as possilbe :) |

Oh my....prepare to give your  away....read up on hypoglycemia, Yorkies are prone to this...Oh and prepare to be broke...I can't stop shopping for toys, clothes, hair pieces....It's so addicting!!! |
Make informed choices about vaccines & meds, e.g., for worms & parasites. Give correct doses of meds, & be aware of possible side effects. Don't allow pup, if possible, to eat or drink from the ground outside. |
Patience, Patience. She will have to get up during the night to go potty. You probably won't get much sleep to start with. Baxter is now 14 months and we still get up some nights to go out. I highly recommend crate-training. I failed miserably with Baxter and the crate but was successful with a pom and crate-training. It is much easier if you crate-train. Good luck with your new puppy. If you are like me, it will be running your life soon! |
Vaccines, inform yourself. Jackson had a reaction to the Lepto shot. Most people (I learned after the fact) don't give their dogs the lepto shot. Don't give rabies shot at the same time as any of the others, it could be too much for them. Have patience! Potty training takes time and patience but it can be done. Just be very consistent and put them on a schedule. Crate training can be best. For the first months, you will be getting up in the middle of the night with him to go potty. You might want to invest in an ex-pen. I felt bad leaving Jackson in the crate all the time so I got an ex-pen that he has yet to have an accident in. Prepare to spend money! LOL. Besides the necessities (vet bills, food, etc) I'm always buying Jackson stuff. I can't help myself. |
