We need help on the name for our new yorkie! We are desperate here! Our new Yorkie puppy comes in two days and we have yet to decided on this poor little guys name. At first we were definitely going to name him Gretzky, after Wayne Gretzky! We are HUGE hockey fans and this only seemed appropriate. The more I thought about it I felt bad, he is 16 weeks old and he is going to be in for a culture shock as is moving from Arkansas to Boston. I then decided we would keep his name as Oscar (the name his breeder named him). However, now every time I talk about something to do with him I call him Gretzky! Part of me wants a whole new start for this little guy, he's our puppy now so we'll name him what we want but everyone has their own opinion on this, "I like Gretzky!" or "No keep it as Oscar it'll be easier!" Which I would believe but my parents got a puppy 16 weeks old 2 years ago and changed her name no problem. I just can't decided which one I like more! I am stressed beyond belief over this! So I'm going to take a poll and see what happens. Gretzky?? or Oscar?? HELP US PLEASE!!!! Kristen :) |
I like Gretzky :) It's unique! |
I say go for Gretzky if that's the name you like! It's easy enough to change a dog's name... just be sure to say his name over and over and over when you're with him and he'll catch on pretty quickly! |
Well I am Canadian....so I say Gretzky!!! I got my fur baby at 14 weeks and her name was Clare....we changed it to KiKi and kept the Clare for her middle name on her registration papers... Gretzky Oscar!!!! Good luck! |
First off, Hi! :wavey: :welcome4: :yorkiesar Secondly, I like Gretzky. It's unique, it's special to you and I think it's adorable! You can buy him a little hockey jersey to wear! How cute will that be. Renaming a dog is not that hard and a young puppy is especially easy. But don't stress over it, wait until you get him home, I bet his name will come to you. And don't be surprised if it turns out to be Orr :D (as in Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins, only one of the greatest hockey players of all times:cool:) |
I like Gretzky, that is so cute and original. |
Gretzky for sure. lol.. I like it and I never put it together with the hockey player until I saw all of your post. :) |
You can change your dogs name any time. They'll get it. Just be sure to associate his new name with treats. And besides, how often are you really going to call him by his real name? Most of the time he'll be Gretzy-poo, or Gret, or baby, or sweetie, or something. He won't even know he real name! One of my boy's names is Chip and was call him Chippy or Chippy-Chips most of the time, then my other boy is Smokey and we call him Mokey or Moke. lol I vote on changing it. Oscar is really common for any animal! |

Gretzke for sure!! It means a lot to you and you love it! He'll catch on in no time! We named ours weird . . . Woody Morgan (for the golf course we live on and our favorite beverage) and Bogie Kranopolis (for a golf score and my husbands nickname), it you love it . . . stick with it! |
I would change it if its what you want. I changed Mollys from Bubbles when i adopted her at 2 years old, and she soon got used to it. With a rescue dog you never know if they have been shouted at using their old name, so sometimes its good to change. |
Gretzke for the win!! |
I vote gretzke. A big name for a little guy which so suits the yorkie size and personality ;) |

Howie (Gordy Howe)? I didn't decide on Ellie's name until she came home. It's okay to wait and it's okay to change their name. :) |
