Amazingly smelly urine OK I just discovered its Tank whos peeing in te house. And its just 1 pee that smells SOOOO bad. So I need help. Hes a neutered male. is this marking or a bladder infection or something else? What do I do if its marking? Hes my only boy and Ive never had boys before hi Thanks |
And I should say this started last week and Tanks 1 and 1/2 years old. Thanks |
Is he drinking enough? Concentrated urine is very strong smelling. I would take him to the vet to rule out a bladder/kidney infection. These conditions cause frequent urination...often times a sense of real urgency, like to you gotta pee real bad right now, but it turns out that there is only a small amount of urine produced. And then it happens again in a short time. Another possibility is diabetes. Dogs get it too, and frequent urination is one sign. If it turns out he is simply marking, then maybe you could try belly bands for a while? It's a difficult habit to break if you can't catch him in the act, so these would at least protect your house. You could take it off when you take him outside to pee so he gets the idea that outside is the place to do that. Make sure to praise him and give him treats for peeing in the right place, and if you catch him, yell "NO!" very loudly. I have used a squirt bottle filled with water to accompany the "no!" with good effect. It is important to neutralize the pee where he has gone so he doesn't go back to the spot (even after you can't smell it any more, their sensitive noses pick up the scent and the scent says "TOILET" to them!). There are good products on the market in the US to do this, but I have always used white vinegar with good results. But if it was my dog, a trip to the vet to rule out medical reasons would be my first act. |
:thumbup: All good advice. I've used the spray bottle too for barking. Very effective. |
Rylie's pee is usually pretty concentrated and strong smelling too. he doesn't go more than normal though so I don't think there is anything wrong with him...I just think males have more concentrated and smelly urine. He has long hair and by the end of the week he has pee on it and OMG he is stinky. |

If your dog is drinking enough and he still has concentrated or very strong smelling urine, he needs to see a vet. "Old" urine...like urine on his hair over a period of days...is a totally different thing. Urine decays, just like anything else organic. As it degrades it changes form, developing a strong ammonia scent. Rylie sounds normal to me! Old urine should stink...fresh urine from a healthy, neutered animal should not. |
It sounds like marking. When Males mark they are leaving their scent so it makes sense to me that it would stink to us |

I agee he should be checked for a urinary tract infection but it could just be marking. My Chachi was 2 when he started so I dont think there is a specific timeline when they start always |
Tank has a vet app. this monday. I had to wait till then since thats when my favorite vet is in. Im making a concerted effort to make sure he gets fresh water always available and keeping an eye on hes behavior. Thanks for the advice :) |
Didn't you just recently dogsit for someone? It could be a reaction to the new dog in the house. |
You know I did just recently have my girlfriends Lab. I never thought of that! Could that have started Tank to Mark? The lab was a 1year old neutered male, who thankfully didnt pee in my house. And heres the kicker. Im going to have a neighbors Shih Tzu next week FOR A MONTH. If it was the lab that bothered Tank were in trouble now. Thanks for reminding me ,Ill tell my vet that too. |
Smelly urine My boy had been smelling horrible. Took him to vet and although the urinalysis was not conclusive for a UTI he was started on an antibiotic. There must have been an infection because the change was immense and began helping right away. At the time I took him to the vet I had given him a bath 2 hrs earlier and after he pee'd the smell was awful immediately. We've still got a few days left on the antibiotic but it's made such a difference. Get your little ones in and get them checked. |
