How much of a Greenie do you let your puppy chew? I have been letting Millie Sage eat only about 1/2 of any one greenie that I give her. I just think that by a certain size it gets to the point she could accidently swallow it and get it caught in her throat, or have a big chuck in her belly. But I think it's sort of a waste of the greenie. Am I worried unnecessarily? Do dogs have better sense? |
i do the same thing with lexi. i take it away from her when it gets too small. you never know what could happen... so be on the safe side always.. |
Thanks for the reply. I have been thinking about getting the next size up greenie, so that it will last longer. Or get the big greenie size and it should last a few days! |
I definitely say take away the greenie when it gets to a certain size. I don't even think you need to break it in half - they are meant to be chewed on in its full size. I've read a lot of stories about dogs dying from eating greenies - the dogs don't chew them up all the way then swallow them (my yorkie is a gulper, for sure) and there have been reports of not only choking, but also of intestinal blockage. wow that is good to know. I just started giving Gus greenies and he loves them. I never thought of him choking. |
When it gets small i take it away, she has one laying around for weeks, she chews on it once in a while! |

I think the choking problem that I was reading about a while ago was dealing with dogs that gulp their food. Ahia is one of those dogs that gulps. She will finish a greenie in less than 3 minutes. so what i have started doing is cut a chunk for her to chew on. not big enough for her to get choked on. if you warm it a bit in the microwave it will soften enough to cut easily. |
Hreason - thanks for those sites, they were quite informative. Very interesting stuff to think about. I was letting her have them because of the "dental" thing, and now this may not even be a benefit. Quote:

Oh! Yeah, I think its a good idea to take it away when its half the size. Even if you feel like your wasting it, its better to be safe than sorry. Have you ever tried the greenie bits? Brody didn't like his greenie, but he kind of likes the little bits. He prefers to chew on his pizzle or cow tendon. I think greenies are the most advertised dental chew, but pretty much if they are chewing on anything hard, it is good for their teeth because it scrapes off plaque. So if the greenie scares you (scares me!), you might try something else. |
