Lil' Yorkies and Big Yorkies Hi. Maximus may soon have a sister. I had been looking for a 7lb Yorkie or higher because Maximus is 14 lbs. However, I have come across a lil girl, but she is only 4lbs. Anyone out there with big yorkies and lil' yorkies and how well do they play together? My aunt seems to think Maximus may hurt her??? Any thoughts are appreciated. thank you! |
u know peanut is 3lbs and he has play dates with a 10lb male and they are great with eachother. I think it should work out for you, i think at first when she is a little one max will konw and he will be gentle..the 10lb male (sam) seems to know that pnut is smaller and he isnt rough with him |

I have one that is 2.5 lb. and one that is 10 lb. At first Sydney (10lbs.) had to get use to Chloe and played too rough when she got excited , so I had to watch...but she calmed down and now they play together very well. I still watch to make sure Sydney doesn't accidentally roll on her when they are playing...she gets so excited when she plays :) |
We don't personally have a big and small pair (mine are both big! :)) but I do have friends at the dog park who have a small/big pair. There is a lady who has a 4-5lb Yorkie and a 40 or 50lb Bassett Hound. They play together a lot. There is also a lady with a 4-5lb Pom/Chihuahua mix with a larger (maybe 30lbs?) cocker spaniel. My friend has a 7lb Dachshund who loves to play with her 100lb Golden Retrievers. I think it's fine given they are supervised during rough play, of course. :) |
My dog is a big girl-- 11 lbs!-- and she has always played pretty well with dogs that are smaller than she is, but I'll admit to being a little concerned sometimes. She's really rough-and-tumble in her play, and there have been times at the dog park where I walked her away from very small yorkies, chihuahuas and such because I honestly am fearful that she might mistakenly harm them if she gets really riled up. Penny is five times bigger than a 2lb yorkie-- so I always end up envisioning how much damage a 55 pound dog could do to Penny! |
1 Attachment(s) There's no guarantees, and an awful lot depends on Maximus's temperment and patience levels I think.... But at four pounds, my little boy has a wonderful time playing with our neighbor's very gentle and patient 20lb cairn terrier. The neighbor's dog likes to chase little Nikko around, and uses one paw to put him in headlocks whenever he can actually catch him, which Nikko loves trying to squirm out of. :-) The rest of the time, Nikko jumps all over the bigger dog's face, who just growls and wags his tail and then usually tries putting Nikko into another headlock. We invite the neighbor's dog over all the time because he's left home alone all day every day, and besides - he does an awesome job of helping to burn off some of Nikko's excess of energy! I wish we could get another dog ourselves, but that's just not possible right now. Attachment 265457 |
1 Attachment(s) My 7/8lb Mika's best pals are our 50lb staff and 100+lb Old English Sheepdog! She has never been hurt(not even as a tiny pup), infact she has hurt them! I think if they're the smallest they stick up for themselves better-least in our house! |
PIptickle...Is your brown & white dog SITTING on the Black & White dog's BUTT!?!?! THAT is a hoot! |
I personally think it's unfair. The bigger one's should have one his size to play with. Austin has been around tiny dog's & he play's but i can see he watches every move he make's & Doesn't run as fast. When he plays with bigger dogs or his brothers he goes all out. When i got each of my boys after Brownie i made sure they were going to be at least 10 lbs. |
Yorkies are Stronger than you Think! I have 3 Yorkies that are 10 lbs.,7 lbs. and 5 lbs. but they are a Family, Father, Mother & Daughter. When they are playing they seem very rough but you would be surprised at how Strong Yorkies are that is if they are "Healthy" mine only go to the Vet. once a Year for their Annual check-up. They all have that Terrier attitude, they are not as frail as everyone here thinks. Artie is very aware of the weight difference when he plays w/the other 2 Females, actually the smallest one Pom Pom has the shortest temper, and is more aggressive than her Parents just b/c of her size. I guess she has more to prove? |
1 Attachment(s) Mika is knocking on the door of about 10 pounds ,and Maya is just under 3. Here they are going toe to toe over a pair of my daughter's thongs.... and yes they play just fine. |
I have three yorkies as well, they range from 13 lbs to 8 lbs and 4 lbs. Almost always it's the little one that gives a hard time to the other two unless the other two gang up on him and they only do that when they've had enough of being pestered. It's never a dull moment... :) I sometimes have to intervene and tell them to cool it but usually it's all good fun. The picture in my avatar is good example of how well they get along |
I have two yorkies - one almos 8#'s and one just 5#'s. They play well together. The bigger one (Katy) stands over the little one (Sophie) and tries to be dominant but only in a gentle way because the little one is very fiesty! The only problem I have is Katy is quite jealous and pushes herself between me and Sophie when I am paying attention to Sophie. I guess Katy thinks I am only hers. I am currently letting Sophie sleep with us now and Katy has been very good about this and actually snuggles with Sophie on the bed at night. :) |
I luv the pics! Thank you for all the feedback. |
