New Here with a Question We got a new baby girl yesterday, and she is adorable. We researched and researched and chose an AKC-registered female. And, I chose a breeder who owns one mom and one dad and only breeds them occassionally. My question is not a big deal; I am just curious about her legs. She seems to have very long legs for a Yorkie, IMO. I don't have anything to compare her to, so if someone has a new little one, less than 3 months old, please let me know approximately how long his/her legs are. She will be spayed as soon as she is able and will be a pet only. So, again, we love her no matter what. I just think I have researched this so long that I am used to seeing those teensy tiny Yorkies. She just doesn't seem smaller than the other puppies (of larger breeds) I've owned at the same age. And, it seems to be because of her legs. Thanks! |
Long Legs Welcome to YT!! Longer legs are to be found in most of the successful show lines. Achieving the proper proportion, an approximate square, while maintaining graceful movement with enough length of leg to show a luxurious silk coat is the objective in a show line. Show puppies are often not placed until about the 8th month, which is about the time they begin to blossom from the awkward teenage stage into graceful young adulthood. In a breeding program geared toward the eye of the pet buyer you will notice much shorter legs. The reason is that the shorter leg is more attractive in the 8-12 week range, which is when the pet puppy is placed. These puppies will likely be longer in body than leg at maturity. Additionally the shorter leg is preferable with a short coat, which is very common in a strictly pet program. Soft, modified silk, or cotton coats make for very cute puppy pictures but will be nearly impossible to maintain as a full coat, so they will likely be kept short. The shorter leg helps to soften the overall appearance. Can you post some pictures of your girl? |
C C Kent good post! Mimi has long legs, when her hair was down to the floor, it looked like she was floating.:p Momo has short legs, tiny face, cobby little body, & cottony coat. When he was a pup, he was so cute (he still is to me!).:) C C Kent, :goodpost: ellykay72 :welcome4: to YT! |
Welcome to YT! :wavey: So glad to have you here. Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your girl & her pretty legs. |
Hi and Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! My Aunts dog Kakashi is 5lbs. and 3 ozs. He has legs that are soo long!! When you look @ him walk he looks like a very, very small Grt. Dane. He is the brother to my Baron, They're 14 months old!! Baron has very short legs but a longer body!! They're both just loved pets, But, They look nothing alike...Baron weighs between 7-8 pounds and looks like a beast beside his Bro. But, Kakashi is still taller!!:) |
Lacy had long legs as a puppy...she's long, tall, and lean. Be prepared...long legged yorkies are fast runners!! |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for the all welcomes and great information! Here is a picture (if I do it right). This is probably not the best angle to see the length of her legs, but we had just bought her new bed. And, she LOVES it!! |
Very interesting information in this thread. Chipper has such long legs. He is so much taller than Rosie but weighs at least 1/2 lb. less. As for being fast runners, you bet your booties he is.:D:D:D I've made it so that if by chance he gets out of one of our doors they are all blocked so he can't get off the porch/patio area. He's frightened me so badly.:( |
she is adorable, and yes, yes I do that she likes that bed! ;) |
