Advise about breeder I sent a good friend to a breeder that I thought would be a great match for what she was looking for(champion line, english cream Golden Ret.) Anyway she paid 1200 plus extra for breeding rights..Her vet check confirmed that the puppy (4 mos) has undescended testicles. The vet said that they most likely will not drop..and a good breeder would know that by this age..The breeder disagrees and said to wait a year..also the breeder got upset that my friend changed the puppy's name..She asked to bring the dog back for a full refund..my friend is attached and feels so sad...I feel terrible cause I sent her there. She has a contract and Health guarantee..any advice. |
I would advise your friend to get a second opinion before making any decsion. All vets are not 100 % right all the time and who knows maybe someone else will give her a different oppinion. |
Advice about breeder not advise...duh..running on empty |
How old is the pup? |
true..I am usually interested in female's so the testicle topic was a new one for me. |

My best friend's family had a dog with this but they called it cryptorchidism (sp) but that pretty much means retained testicles. Their vet also said that if they aren't there by 12 weeks then they are more than likely not going to drop. He told them that he would be a normal dog and he could possibly impregnate a female if one of his testicles did "drop". He did definitely say that some vets believe that it is passed from generation to generation. The dog never worked out as a breeder for them, so I guess you have to decide whether or not to trust the breeder. If she says wait a year is she willing to amend the health certificate or contract to 18 months since she is asking her to wait? |
That is exactly what her vet told her..could be hereditary. I think she is just upset that she paid alot plus extra for him and the breeder won't work with her. I too, asked her about the contract and health guarantee..I think she was just hoping that there would be no strings attached and this would go smoothly. |
All male puppies testicles are undescended. Upon examination the vet should be able to feel them, but they haven't descended yet. In a retriever it can take up to 6 months of age before they drop. If the breeder has registered her kennel with AKC...it is expected any puppies produced will keep the name so her kennel receives the recognition should any future off spring be shown. Now that I think of that....this breeder's kennel must not be registered...because if it were...your friend wouldn't be allowed to change the dog's name without her permission. She sold the dog as a breeding prospect, if his testicles won't descend...he would not be considered for breeding. The breeder offered a full refund...I'm not sure what else your friend expected. |
She was not expecting to have to return her puppy..That is not what she wanted..She was doing her part...Paying cash, plus the extra fee for breeding rights and taking him to a vet for health check. This is her first puppy and was not expecting to have the breeder ask for him back..all she wanted was a refund for the extra breeding rights fee..because she was advised by her vet to neuter him. Now about the AkC thing..I am not sure if he had a registered name already..that could be the reason she did not like his name changed..but she should have explained that..My friend is a Doctor of Neurology..not a dumb woman..I think she just wants to be treated fairly. |
I would think the vet knows a bit more than a breeder...Seeing how they have to go to college to become a vet!!! I would avise her to get a second opinion and take that to the breeder. I was mislead when I purchased my yorkie. But I love her so much:aimeeyork I could never take her back!!! |
Perhaps you should inquire on this site Golden Retriever Forum Many breeders don't offer any type compensation for retained testicles until the dog is at least 12 months old. Personally I'd give it a few months. |
Yeah,,like I said she is a doctor herself and to tell her not to listen to a doctor would be kind of silly of me..Believe me, I know not all Vets are 100% accurate with prognosis nor are M.D.'s. But I think she just got shaken up a bit when the breeder reacted so nastily to the Vets recommendation..I would bet there are more bad breeders then bad doctors. I got some good advice..thanks YT..members.. |
