New Puppy and a questions Hi all! I just got a new Yorkie puppy named Raja. He is 4 months old and I've had him for about 3 weeks. I have never owned a yorkie before (my last dog was a german shepard) and the Raja acts so different that what I'm used to. Raja has taken a liking to me, which is great. He listens well, doesn't have accidents in the house and is a wonderful little pup - BUT he doesn't seem to like anyone else. He is scared of people and runs away and hides when I have guests in my house. He doesn't let anyone pet him. I've let a couple people hold him, and he's not aggressive but he doesn't enjoy it. Is this common with the breed? If so what are some techniques to get around it. I've heard conflicting things about letting people hold/pet the dog and allowing the dog to go up to people on his own. Which is it?? oh, he is good with other dogs. We go to a "playgroup" weekly and he runs around with the puppys and runs away from the people! Thanks for your advice!:animal-pa |
HI! Welcome to YT! you will love this place! I have learned a lot from being on here. I'm like you, I've had big breeds all my life, and was a vet tech for 7 yrs, so I was around a lot of different breeds. I got Fiona when she was 3.5 months old, and she was the same, very skiddish around new people, and used to urinate when we would come around. After being with us for a little bit, she really came out of her shell. Maybe he just needs some more time with you and really get to know himself as well as others. he seems like he will adjust fine You may want to really reward him with treats, even have new people lure him with food! First I want to say welcome to YT!!! and Congradulations on little Raja:) Yorkies are so different than any other breed that I have had too. Raja is still a puppy and it is not uncommon at all for them to be a little leary of new people. Imagine if you were his size;) It sounds like you are doing a good job with him. Do you take him out much to meet new people? I think that four months is a good time to start. and you can take him out more in larger intervals as he gets used to this. Once he has all his puppy shots the park is a great place to see people but not be overwhelmed. Also I would give the new people that come into your home a treat to give him so that he associates people as a good thing. If people = reward he will learn to look forward to meeting new people. You could try this in your play group too. Give him time and I am sure he will grow out of alot of it:) |

Hi! :wavey: :welcome4: :yorkiesar Good idea to have treats for visitors to give him. Start off with them just sitting and ignoring him. You can drop a few treats close to them. Once he has come up to eat those, have them drop their hand down the side of the chair with the treat in it. Continue to ignore him and let him come to them. They can even just drop the treat to the ground, but do it when he's looking at them so that he sees the treat come from them. You can progress to him taking it out of their hand. This should help him to associate visitors with yummies! |
