Lil Paw soft harness I jut bought a "Lil Paw" Soft Harness at Pet Smart. I couldn't resist it cause it had rhinestones and really looked cute. The downside is that since Annie is a puller it chokes her. This harness will choke, if your dog wants to lead you. I can take the harness back,but does anyone have any tips on making Annie walk beside me instead of in front of me? |
What works for me is to keep the leash short, you want her right by your side. I have them sit or stand quietly before we take off. Then I'll say "Lets go this way" and walk off. As soon as they pull or try to rush ahead I say "Quit!" give a gentle bump and stop. They have to sit or stand quietly, they get a good dog from me and off we go again. If it's been awhile since we've walked, it may take 5 or 6 tries to get them to understand and remember. But usually it only takes 1 or 2 times and they walk good beside me. |
We mostly do what TeresaM said, except we don't stop walking at all... Nikko tends to get really distracted if we stop walking, and his curious nose pretty much zaps any self-control he might have had. So we we just keep right on walking at a nice brisk pace, and whenever he pulls a certain direction, we just give him a little tug back toward us and say "pay attention!" His leash is always very very short. From the time we started taking him on walks like this daily, it took him about three 10-min walks to mostly get the hang of it. Within a week, he had become a really pretty excellent walker, unless something super exciting caught his attention. Now, almost a month later, all we're really doing is working hard to ignore the "distractions" and focus on the walking, but it's definitely getting better. I think one of the main tricks honestly is just walking your dog a LOT - like definitely once a day - for nice fairly long walks, where she will encounter plenty of distractions that she can learn to ignore. There is a method that works - takes time...and can get annoying! But works! Basically, you start walking and anytime your dog starts pulling or walking in front of you, turn around and walk in the other direction. And just keep switching directions anytime your dog walks in front. You could also get the Premier Easy Walk Harness - which is made specifically to control your dog from walking in front. The lead attaches to the front of their chest - so if your dog attempts to walk in front of you or in a different direction - it automatically pulls them back to you. |
