Frightened Baby I hope someone can help with my problem child. Jasmine will be 5 months old on September 4th. I got her when she was 13 weeks old. She is afraid of everything and everyone. When I try to pick her up her ears go down and she kinda drops real low like I am going to hit her.I have never hit her, so I don't know what she is afraid of. She is very playful it's only when you try to pet her or pick her up that she acts afraid. I hold her alot and give her treats, I let her lick all over me, she lays in my lap, on my sofa, on my bed I try to show her that she is loved and there is nothing to be afraid of, but it hasn't worked. Once you have her picked up she is fine it's just when you try to pick her up. I also support her well when I pick her up. What do you think is the problem, and how can I fix it. It is kinda embarrassing when someone trys to pet her (even me) and she starts cowering like an abused dog. Please help me. |

I'm not sure if I can be of any help or not. I would say just keep doing exactly what you are doing? Did you get her from a breeder? Have you talked to whomever you got her from to see if maybe there is some reason why she is so timid. Maybe something happened that scared her before you got her and she just hasn't gotten over it. It's just like with housebreaking you have to be patient with her. Good Luck. A friend of mine has a Min Pin and it took her quite a while to get to where she would warm up to anyone including her owners. It may just be her personality. She is an absolute sweetheart now. I'm her second mommy we babysit quite a bit if our friend has to go out of town. They since have gotten a divorce and they had 2 min pins. She kept the male and he the female. She is like one of my own dogs. That how she is just all over me. So there is hope it may just take a while. I hope things get better. Keep us posted. |
I think it will pass with time. Just socialize her as much as possible with other people and dogs and experiences. Play dates with other yorkies and visit or invite people to come over and play. I would emphasize having her come to you instead of you going to her. Stand back and call her. Give her lots of time and I think eventually you'll see she will get over this that way. :) |
Gioia was doing the same thing when she was a pup . This is just a phase . Gioia is ok now . |
I agree it will pass. Destiny use to do it all the time when she was younger. It was like she was hand shy from being hit but we never hit or spank our Yorkies. She's almost a year and a half now and rarely does it anymore. |
Lily used to act like that also. She is better but still does it sometimes. Lily is 7 months now so maybe it is a phase. |
archie actually does that when he meets new people. he goes low to the ground, ears are back. it's a sign of submission, like saying, I'm letting my guard down for you. it's not really a big deal, but he keeps doing it because when he does it, everyone starts petting him and he gets on his back and gets belly rubs. honestly, most people would rather have dogs that are submissive to people. |
I agree with the ohters, Just continue to take her everywhere you can and socialize her. Get her used to a lot of different environments, people and other dogs. Don't force her but let her do it at her own pace. I think she will slowly gain the trust and confidence to be less shy. Good luck. |
If she's hand shy and only dropping to submission when you reach down to pick up or pet her, try Not petting on top of her head or back when you reach down to her, instead scoop your hand under her chin for a little rub and then back away a step and squat down and wait for her to come up to you for a treat. (one cheerio is a treat). Try to repeat this until she stops dropping and only pet her on top when your sitting with her for a cuddle, not bending down over her. |
I think its just a York trait. Desi does the same thing, yet she is not shy, she goes with everyone and is very well socialized. But, when I bend down to pick her up she also squats and puts her head down like I'm going to hit her. It use to bother me until I realized its just her way. When she wants me to pick her up she runs up to me squats and lowers her head, thats her sign for me to carry her. She's been that way since we got her at 12 weeks, she is now 9 months. |
Mr. Big has just started doing this. A couple of nights ago I called him to me by pointing to the floor and putting my finger on the floor. The closer he got to me the closer he got to the floor and by the time he reached my finger he was all splayed out on the floor with his chin on the floor too. I laughed and picked him up. He was so flat to the floor that I couldn't easily get my fingers under him. He only weighs 3 1/2#, and is not quite 8 months. I'm calling him my puppy rug now. LOL He is so submissive when he does this I'm afraid he's going to pee and crawl in it. LOL I don't know what has changed for him. I have a female going into heat but I don't see how that would cause him to act submissive with me. I have a total of 5 Yorkies and then a neutered Pom and a spayed Schnerrier. Mr. Big is the youngest but not the smallest. His half sister is about 3 oz smaller. I am the alpha here so he's not being beat on by the others. LOL This momma don't allow that. LOL Sylvia |
