Piddle pad question The last time I had a puppy, piddle pads hadn't been invented yet, so this is new to me. I am wondering about "strategies" for using them. Right now, each time she eats or drinks or gets "sniffy," I take Puddin to the pad and put her on it. If she wanders off, I put her back. If she starts to squat somewhere else, I put her on the pad. As she is looking for the "right spot" on the pad, I tell her "go potty." As she is going and when she is done, I praise her (no treats yet...want my vet's advice on what to give a pup this young). This is basically the same technique I used to use with newspapers in the pre-puddle pad days. I am home most days, so she won't be left alone often to pee or poop wherever she wants... when I was paper training a puppy, I worked and it took a very long time. How long should I expect it to take before she makes the association between the biological urge and the pads? Is it quicker than newspapers? |

OK, my breeder had them in a pen with newspapers as well. Puddin doesn't seem to have a problem with using the pad as much as I am not yet tuned to her "signs." When she is loose, she in confined to my bathroom (which is bigger than most bedrooms) which has a ceramic tile floor...easy to clean. So far, she's been put on the pad by me, but today she's on her own in there for a while, so I'll have to see how it goes, I guess. |
there is a spray that you can get at petsmart or petco. you spray it on the pee pad and it makes them want to use it. its called potty training aid by simple solution. worked for me with cricket and pepper.:) |
I think once you start adding in treats, she'll get it very quickly. I know it took Chip 2 weeks once we were consistent and added treats. So he wouldn't wander off, I would block the pad to where he couldn't leave and had no choice but to pee and make mama happy :-) I think what you are doing is good though ;-) |
Just keep doing what you are doing but I agree once you give treats it makes a big difference. Chloe P wanted the praise just as much tho. I mean act nuts when she does the right thing. I clapped and jumped around and lots of oohs and aahs. Try freeze-dried fruit peices in the baby foods. They come in a little pouch and are tiny and dissolve almost instantly so not much chewing is required. They are totally fruit no preservatives or anything so I feel comfortable giving them, Chloe is just 5 mos. Hang in there. |
Penny learned to go to her pad with in 2 weeks... I didn't pick it up and replace as soon as she went...so she would smell where she should go...They are pretty smart... |

Today, I put Puddin' in her crate for a nap (door open) and when I went to check on her a bit later, saw she had peed and pooped on the clean pad I had put down! Later in the day I put her on the pad (in the back deck of my SUV as we were in a shopping centre parking lot) and said "go potty" and she did! AngieDoo was at my house the second time she did it! Methinks she is getting the hang of this! We are really, really enjoying her! Are Yorkies always this much fun?? |
Puddin' is sooooo cute, I was so surprised to see her widdle on the pad on command :D. It does not look like you will have much problems with potty training her, she has an awesome and attentive momma:p btw, Dawn it was great meeting you today. Bella let me cut a whole of two nails, she does not want to sit still with me, I think I will send her to the groomer, lol! She wriggles out of the towel. Thank you for the advice... :animal-pa |
milu learned to use the pee pad fairly quickly. i can't remember exactly how long it took to train though (sorry) i would start on the treats ASAP, because that will really help with the training! milu loves her pee pad. every time she wants a treat or my food  she will try to go to the bathroom on the pee pad, because she knows that i need to give her a treat if she can squeeze anything out! 'cause a deal is a deal! :D |
