Size help! What size collar, harness and food bowls do you have for your yorkies?? I found a great deal on some online and they just arrived and they look so small! The collar is adjustable from 6"-10" and the harness is adjustable from 8"-14". The food bowls I got hold 8oz and are 4.25" across...these ones to be exact: ProSelect Bone & Paw RED Embossed Dog Bowl Food Dish 8 oz I am picking up my puppy in 17 days!! And he will be about 10 and a half weeks old. I know I'll have to get new things as he gets older but do you think these are big enough for the first few weeks?? I still have time to exchange them if need be... |
Hi congratulations on your new puppy, the harness is a better choice for a Yorkie because they are succepitcal to collapsed trachea, so you want to avoid collars. Occasionally, Joey wears a break-a-way cat collar, that more of an accessory, I don't use it for walk. How much does your puppy weight? The YTCA recommends yorkies stay with the mother a minimum of 12 weeks, and this is especially important if the yorkie is small. While the mother stops weaning much earlier she is teaching important socialization skills such as inhibition of the biting reflex in the later weeks. Many breeders will hold them an additional two weeks if you ask. I know you are anxious, but it does give them a better head start and makes training easier. The bowls are really cute, and look to be a fine size. |
I do understand about the issues of walking a yorkie on a collar and that is why I have a harness. I just would like him to have a collar with at least his name, my name and phone number on at other times in case the off chance of any accident or he was able to get away. I am mainly wondering about the size at the beginning as I know, depending on his size, he will need to upgrade to bigger as he grows. His parents are 4lbs and 7lbs, I am just not sure how much weight he will put on in the next few weeks before I pick him up. And excuse me he will be 11 and a half weeks old, he was born December 6 and I'll be picking him up February 24. |
I think the food bowls are fine. Same with the harness. The collar I am not sure of. I bought a 6" collar for a baby kitten. It may be big enough or it may be too small. If you saved the receipt I am sure they would let you take it back |
Thanks so much! :D I think I'll return the collar and wait until I get him to see if he needs one or not |
sizes Congratulations:D!! I know that waiting for your furbaby is hard. I had 2 premature births and my children were in the hospital for a month or more:(. Waiting to bring home my yorkie pup was just as hard as waiting to bring home my skinkids. My 10 month old boy is 4.5 pounds and wears a 7 inch collar. He eats a total of 1/2 cup of kibble each day, divided into 2 servings. That equals about 2 ounces per meal. I use two 4 ounce pyrex dishes and they are perfect. Your food bowls should be fine. The collar and harness will depend on what your baby weights. Just keep your receipts and exchange them if you need to. |

Teddys parents were 4 and 7lbs as well! He's almost 7 mnts and he is 9 lbs LOL he just doesnt stop growing but is brother is only 4 lbs. Anyway we have the same dish, I use that dish for his food and I purchased a larger one for his water, he is a thirsty boy! I couldn't find the harness or the collar, we keep Teddy's collar on with our contact info and walk him with a harness though. You should consider microchipping your new little one, It is more reliable to have double protection I feel a lot safer! hope I helped a bit. |
My puppy will be microchipped when I get him from the breeder. However, unless I'm badly mistaken, she will still have to have a collar. It is a law in our state that dogs wear proof of their rabies vaccination on their collars. Knowing that, I've also had an id disk made, too. (I could be wrong and the law may have changed but I don't think it has.) Almost forgot...I'm also going to hang a bell as someone suggested on a YT forum. I bought replacement cat bells since they looked a little bit more interesting than a Christmas jingle bell. |

If I were you, I'd see if the breeder will measure the puppy for you so that you know your harness will fit. I remember the smallest harness I could find still didn't quite fit Finnigan when we brought him home. |
