Well, that was FUN! Hey All, So, do any of you cut your own dogs nails!? As you all have probably read, i was a vet tech for 7 yrs, and I know how to do it all, and i never really understood why the vets always said to NEVER trim your own dogs nails, let the techs be the bad guys....well i get it now! Fiona and I just battled for about 15 min to get them trimmed! Now, she used to be very vocal and really put up a fight when I did this, but today, she was just rolling all over the place, but we got them done! Do any of you have issues with trying to groom your babies!? I just don't want to pay to trim her nails when I can do them myself, and they were getting so long, I just had to do it, so she wouldnt hurt herself! I use a pediapaws. Im afraid if I cut them I would go into the quick |
My parents bought pedipaws, and then returned it! I used to use dremels at the vet, and thought they did a good job, but i used the pedipaws and didn't really like it! But to each its own! Yes, when you get the quick its really horrible! thanks! :D |
I have 5 dogs...2 beagles, 2 yorkies and a rat terrier. I do all but Harley, the rat terrier. I decided after the most recent time of trying, that the stress he and i were both under during the fight to clip the nails, wasn't worth the money saved for me. I gave in and let the vet do it when i had him in for shots. Maybe next time i will try with my husband holding him. (They did it with two people..i watched.) I don't mind a little fight but he put up a big one with me. I bought the pedipaws too, but haven't tried it yet..I hope it makes it an easier job!:) |

I have not used the pedipaws, but I use a dremel I got from walmart it was about $15. Its small, rechargeable, and works well. You do have to be careful with getting your babies hair wrapped around it. A suggestion would be use an old pair of panty hose and poke the nails thru. |
I do my own dogs and my MIL's dog. They are all really well behaved and especially on a grooming table. They sometimes will pull their paw away, but other than that, they are good. |
I was "allowed" to do Tatum's for about her first year. Then she started fighting me. She will let me do absolutely everything else. Even sits perfectly still while I trim those little hairs with a scissors that point towards to her eyes. Even between her paw pads with a Wahl trimmer. But definitely not the nails anymore. I actually tried again about 6 months ago and ended up cutting the quick (first time ever) and it was a nightmare. Didn't think it would ever stop bleeding (not gushing, just spotting) and trying to get a bandage to stay on was awful. Didn't have any quick stop stuff and flour wasn't working well. Since then I've been told that cornmeal works better than flour - in case anyone needs that tip! I do all the other grooming for her so I don't really care about the expense to have our vet tech do it every few months. Takes her no time at all to do all four paws - with no fight from Tatum! Go figure. |
:confused:Prince gets extremely nervous and upset so I have to pay $35.00 bucks and take him to his vet. I wish I could do it and save the money, but the vet even has a hard time, so I know there's no hope for me. I've bought and returned everything on the market, but Prince really freaks out. I'm nervous + he's nervous = vet!! |
I wont cut my girls nails. I'm afraid I will get the quick. I do have the pedipaws that they don't mind ( I took the plastic guard off and just use the file , their nails kept getting stuck in the guard :( ) I let the vet or groomer cut them if needed and then I just keep them filed a bit in between so they don't get way to long before the next visit. |
My Captain puts up such a terrible fight and is so strong, it is no longer worth it! I take the entire crew up to a local groomer and she can cut the nails on all 5 of my pups in about 10 minutes and charges $5 per dog. I have tried several places that could eventually get the nails cut, but it was a struggle for them and my pup....so I continued looking until I found this local grommer - the ladies at this shop are so good - my dogs do not fight them and they are quick - they are done with one foot before the pup realizes what is happening. They will even drimmel them after cutting if I want to wait a little longer. |
Just Starting to Be OK Johnny is just starting to be OK with me cutting his nails and he's a bit over 1 1/2 years old. Whenever he lays down next to me, I play with his feet and nails and when I trim, I only do a few at a time. The problem is remembering which ones I've trimmed as the groomer suggested to take about 1/16" off! Some day, I'll probably be able to trim all the nails.:awink: |
I can cut Pixie's, Roxie's and even my Pom's who can be snappy, but Cali goes absolutely nuts. 2 days ago I cut the other 3's nails and got 2 of Cali's done before it became dangerous to continue to try. I just can't afford 15 each to get them done. |
Someone had suggested the PediPaws or a dremmel to me, but I know my dogs would freak with that.... Smokey is scared of noises like that and Chip would get angry at the tool, so clipping is the way to go for me! |
I use the Pedipaws and do Lil' Miss Izzie's nails myself..of course she is one that is very easygoing and loves getting up on the grooming table for any type work (which could be brushing/cleaning teeth/trimming nails / ears etc... and she is very well behaved :angel:... I just tell her she is getting a "Special Girl Pampering"..... She know that afterwards she is in for a "Special Treat"....I have been doing this since she was 12 weeks old. |
