Leaving my Yorkie for a vacation As the days before we leave (Feb 8) draw nearer I get more concerned about leaving Daisy. My daughter will be keeping her for the week we are gone. She knows my daughter but has never been to her house. She has never spent the night anywhere but here. Daisy wants to be with me all the time and cries by the door if I leave her at home when I go out-- something she will have to experience more as the hot weather arrives here in Georgia. I am going to my daughter's house Sunday afternoon and tho I think it might be best if I leave right away I need to explain some things to her as far as feeding and rules/training we have been doing etc. Then what do I do. Just walk out with out making a big deal or kissing her all up? I am trying to treat her like a dog here and not a person. I don't want to get her all excited just before I go. I just keep thinking about the moment she realizes that I left without her. I breaks my heart. Beth  |
Maybe you should take her over for some short visits before you leave her. Let her get used the place and know you will be back to get her. |
I would definitely take her to visit before you just leave her the first time. Baxter is very attached to me and my sister keeps him when I am gone. Fortunately she has a dachsund and she and Baxter play a lot so I don't think he misses me as much. I'm sure Daisy will be fine and excited to see you when you get home. Have fun on the trip! |
Ok, I know this may sound a bit 'out there', but start telling her now that she's going to be staying with your daughter and how much fun she's going to have and that you will miss her while you are gone and that you are coming back and can't wait to hear about all the great things she did while you were away. Be upbeat and excited and positive about it. Have a very happy, calm attitude when you drop her off. A hug and kiss when you leave, no big production. IMHO it's just really important for YOU to not be stressed or upset, Daisy will pick up on that quicker then anything. Have a great vacation, you know Daisy will be well taken care of. :) |
OH honey I feel you! Wookie:aimeeyork and I have only spent one night apart since I got him 3 years ago, and that was because he was in the hospital. I would have stayed there if they would have let me!! My friend/mentor is a hollistic groomer/boarder. She runs her place so that it is totally comforting and relaxing for the dogs. What she recommends to people who are dropping off their dogs is that they don't make a big deal about leaving them. Don't be sad and crying and hanging onto them, because they feed off of you. If you are upset and worried they will be too. I know it is hard to do that, but just think that it is best for her. She saids not to make 'good byes' long. Make it a short, happy time. She also recommends bringing the dog a couple times to the kennel so that they are already a little familiar with the place. Maybe you should do that over the next few days. Hope this helps some. |
Oh I remember the first time I left my boys to go away. It was harder on me than on them. I left them with my boyfriend at the time and he said that once I was gone, Fletcher stared out the window for about an hour waiting for me and then after that they were fine. I have left them overnight a couple times with a friend but I am leaving them for a week in March. It breaks my heart too! I do have a wonderful girl who comes and stays at my house to watch them though. That makes me feel way more comfortable! Have a great trip and don't worry too much about your baby, she'll have fun and get lots of love from your daughter Im sure! :) |
I know how you feel its heartbreaking to leave them.Last Friday I Had to leave my baby with my mum as me and hubby stayed overnight in a hotel to see a band .The thing is I promised when he brought Tia for me it wouldnt change what we normally do: weekends away, going abroad, and overnight stays.OOPS . All that has changed .So I felt guilty and stayed over night.Tia loved it, she played all night with my mums poodle and didnt miss me one bit! I only made 3 phone calls to check everything was ok that wasnt bad going . When I picked her up she hugged and kissed me to death.lol I enjoyed it but not doing it again for a while, well until hubby makes me feel guilty.:animal-pa |
I'd definitely take Daisy for a visit or two, that way she can go there and remember that her and Momma were there together. She won't feel so abandoned, and she'll feel more familiar with her surroundings. Good luck! |
i am leaving for a short vacation too on feb 12. It will only be 4 days. I am starting to worry about charlie. He will be staying with my in-laws here in the house. I am worry they will take him outside for potty and let him eat things that are not good for him especially poop. I always pick up after charlie outside so he won't eat his poop and to keep it clean for him..However, they don't. I left him for 3 days with them before. When I came back, the yard was litter with charlie's poop. I am afraid he might be tempted to eat his own if they don't pick up after him. I want to take him with us but his plane ticket with united airline is at $300. That is way more expensive than ours so hubby said no. |
I would if I could, but she lives an hour away and I have lots of work to do before then. |
I feel you! I'm leaving for Florida Feb.20 - 24th and Jackson is going to stay in my mom's house where he's comfortable but nobody takes care of him like I do, ya know? lol. I keep stressing on giving them the proper directions in how to take care of him, and what I want them to do, lol. I know he's in good hands but I worry. |
I know how you feel. I'm going on a cruise leaving feb 21 and returning the 28. I kill myself everyday thinking where I'm going to leave MIa at. Nobody seems good enough. I dont want to leave her at a boarding house. Going crazy here. |
I always leave Finnigan with my sister when we go on trips. I make sure and bring his bed, his crate and toys, blankets not cleaned,so they smell familar. I also brought him over to visit several times before leaving him there the first time. When we drop him off we get everything situated food/bowls set up toys set up... and then just leave. Last time when we came home Finnigan acted like it was no big deal that we'd been gone! I also have a typed up instruction manual type thing that I leave with her telling her everything she could possibly want to know about him and then some! |
It is so hard to leave them even if you have a close relative to keep them. My two boys stay with my Mom but I still cry every time I have to leave them here. They do just great and never want to leave when we get back. She also says it takes them a couple of days to adjust to the change then they are fine. I have always been told that they do not have any concept of time so don't really know if we leave them for two days or two weeks. Have fun. |
We are going away (just overnight) later this month to a conference at a hotel that is not pet-friendly; my daughter & son-in-law are going with us too. Their house is in the midst of a huge remodel, so a friend is watching their little girl (my granddaughter) here at my house, and she doesn't mind watching Olivia too. She has a little yorkie-poo. Problem is, Olivia doesn't want to come out of her crate for anyone except me. If I am late getting home and I want dh to let her out to potty, he has to actually reach in and get her out. Both of my daughters have said the same thing...they have been here at times when I wasn't and Olivia wouldn't come out for either of them. I don't like it that she's so timid that she won't even come out of her crate! They have tried treats, getting excited, being calm, just leaving the crate door open and go into the other room - all with no success. :( |
