Calm Or Rowdy When does a yorkie "sorta" settle down? I stopped a woman that had 2 yorkies with her to check out her furbabies ( which I seem to do all the time when I see one, my husband says I'm obsessed! LOL) her babies were of course adorable and so so calm! I asked her what age are they and one was 3 1/2 and one that was close to 2. She said it will take a couple of years for them to calm down a BIT. What age did your yorkie settle down? |
I thought they never settled down? At least that's what everyone I ask tells me... Esme is 10 months and WILD. |
Well, it hasn't happened yet but she is only 7 months. Guess I got a while to wait too. |
I like my yorkies hyper and rowdy but after 1 year old they start to settle down and by 2 years old they are not as spunky as when they were puppies. :( It happens my family's and mine yorkies except one(total of 6 yorkies all together). Happy is over 2 1/2 years old and still wild as anything. Unfortunately, he belong to my father. |
Tatum was pretty calm from the very beginning (she's 1.5 yrs old now). When she plays, she can get rowdy and wild but for the most part is still very calm. Now that we have a new pup, Australian Shepherd, she plays really hard and wild with her and can go that way all day long but it's like the minute she walks back inside, she puts on her calm demeanor. Stormie (the new pup) is all "outside dog" (we're in the country) so when we open the door to let Tatum in, it's almost like she looks back at Stormie stopped at the threshold and puts her nose in the air like "ha! I get to go inside.... you don't!". Then as soon as she's inside, she's all cuddles and calmness. But I hear I have one of the minority personalities! ;) |
Mac is 15 months and I don't see any signs of him remotely calming down. Mellie on the other hand is 11 months and she is a little bit more of a lady. Not much more though. |

Mine settled down while she was pregnant. The puppies will be 5 weeks old on Wed. and she is right back to her old self. Wants to play all the time. |
Chloe was one in Feb and she has recently settled, if you can all it that. I thought she was getting sick, Lacey is yapping at her to play and she is looking at her, like you youngsters are too much! She still has spurts of play but nothing like when she was a puppy. |
I think it depends on there personalities. Maddie will be three in Feb and she real laid back. Rudy will be two in Nov and is a mad man, Polly is 6 months and give Rudy a run for his money. Maddie will play when she wants but when she is done Rudy and Polly know to leave her along. |
Mine are very playful as puppies, running and chasing each other..playing with toys etc...but when I pick them up, they settle right down and sit calmly with me..or allow me to brush and hold them...I start alot of lap holding at 6 weeks. I will NEVER breed a hyper Yorkie...hate it, hate it, hate it!!!! I used to have to groom some who literally bounced off the walls like rubber balls. |
I agree it's a dog to dog thing personality wise. Simon Pickle has moments of both (he's seven now so not a youngster so much) he's calm when I'm home and follows me everywhere, but when I leave for work I hear him shoot out that doggie door like a bullet to start a barkfest with the neighbor dogs. He's gotten better with age of course, but every so often his mind gets to running faster than his legs do. Lol. Jeni |
I'm very surprised at how laid back Rowdy is at 6 months. Oh don't get me wrong, he can romp with the best of them, but when I pick him up, he settles right down - 95% of the time. I expected him to be more hyper and maybe he is gearing up to be - maybe he hasn't hit his stride yet. I love his energy - he can go go go , and then in the next minute, he is as quiet as a mouse on my lap. It's the same when we go to bed. We let him up in the bed with us before we put him in his crate for the night - he can be doing bed laps - zoom zoom zoom - but the minute we lay down, he snuggles right down beside us. I guess I didn't answer you question - but it sounds like Yorkies are pretty different little ones - some fast, some slow, all of them "just right!" :) |

Gucci is 1 yrs old, just had a bday in July 10. She can be a wild woman when she plays with the kids. She runs back and forth so fast I wonder when her energy will stop. When she lays down with us to sleep she lays calm, but if I get up she follows me whereever I go. |
Gracie is 13 months old now and is becoming quite the little lady. She is much more quiet and calm now than before. She was wild when she was small but now she is very pleasant. Actually, I kind of miss the puppy wildness. |
The terrier breed is more spunky than other breeds. They keep their spunk sometimes all through their senior years. Maggie is calm if no visitors come to the house, then it like a whirlwind out of control. |
My eight month old male is a {{{WILD}}} man (sorta like my nine-year-old son!). My four-year-old female is calm and sweet as she can be. BUT if one of them starts playing with a toy, the other is he** bent to take it away! That's when the barking and growling starts from both. They sound very vicious and serious, but I've about figured out that they are playing, otherwise surely the one who had the toy in the first place would hide with it. |
Magic is about to be a year old and she is calming down...she still has her moments but they are getting less and less crazy...Sailo on the otherhand has always been pretty calm, she has her days that are wild but her personality is just calm in general....I think each yorkie is a little different!!! |
I love the fact that Deegan is wound for sound. He always seems to be so happy and playful. His spunk keeps me upbeat too. I just hope that he doesn't settle down too much. |
