Hello There :) I hope I am posting this in the right place but I am new here on Yorkie Talk! I decided to get my first dog (yorkie!)but I am really doing my research first. I have my own home one floor and living with my fiance. I am alone for most of the time and I need a new best friend :). I decided I would love and could handle a yorkie because its a small dog, clean, and hopefully very loving. My mom is buying me a yorkie sinse she had taken the bischon when I moved. Anyways I am just very nervous.I am not getting a really small yorkie because of the complications I was reading about. Probally one that would be between 5-10 pounds. I am just very nervous and I hope you guys will help me prepare for this new puppy. I just puppy proofed the house and started gated rooms off for now. I just need some advice on the care for yorkies. I had read alot of threads so far on there diet and general facts. I dont have kids or anything that would put stress on the yorkie. I hope to get some advice on food, toys, and advice for keeping a yorkie healthy. I know they can live pretty long but I cant bare to loose it..So I hope I can get some advice. Also I will be taking it out alot when I go to like stores or little places. Is it safe to cary these animals in like totes or any nice bags that are safe out there! Thanks :) |
Welcome to Yorkietalk. I think you will love having a Yorkie. One thing you may have discovered if you have been reading YorkieTalk is that it sometimes takes a long to potty train them. Great idea to get as much information as possible before getting a Yorkie. I can't really give you advice on the small Yorkies because I have a 13 pounder. She is a pretty sturdy little girl and the joy of my life. |
Hi! :wavey: welcome to YT!! :welcome4: You have come to the right place gather information and help about yorkies!! You'll be able to get a lot of help and guidance here. So any questions you have, just ask! There are some good commercial foods; Innova, Orijen, Canidae, Wellness, to name a few. And the Hide-A-Squirrel is a great toy. It can be found at PetSmart. |
Oh and I forgot to mention...A big thing with yorkies to keep them healthy, is to keep their teeth clean. The most effective way to do this is to brush them. There are also products such as Petzlife to use in combinaton with brushing help prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Otherwise there are dental chews that while they may help a bit, brushing is best. |
Hi! :wavey: Welcome! :welcome4: :yorkiesar |
Welcome to YT!! You came to the right place for information. There are so many knowledgeable people here! |
Thanks guys for the warm welcomes and advice! I hope to take my baby girl home tomorow but I am still freakin out. I look at all the people that I just graduated with that are having babys and I am loosing my mind over having my first dog. The only thing I am worrying about is the barking. I live in my own house but I share with neighbors that live sorta upstairs. Even though they have like 1278236 kids I know they dont want the dog to bark. I dont mind it barking if someone is at the door but I want to make sure it doesnt go nuts when I go back to work for a couple of hours. Just things like that I need advice. |

hey! i just wanted to tell you we just got our first dog on saturday and she's a 7 month old yorkie. i live in apartment where i'm not supposed to have dogs and wasn't planning on getting one at all but she really captured our hearts. but she has barked one bark this week, and thats all. and that bark was when i left her in my bedroom to clean the living room. so mine at least is a very, very quiet pup! good luck, you'll be a great owner! |
:welcome4::welcome4::welcome4: |
Congrats & yay! I had the same fears a year ago, but so far Tiki Bear has been a wonderful companion. I'm sure you will enjoy! |
Welcome to YT! :wavey: Glad you were doing your research first. I used to raise Bichons, I think you will find that yorkies, like Bichons are very loving. Read the training forum for info on barking. Did you pick up your furbaby today???? We want pictures!! :D |
Hi...and welcome to YT!!!! One thing you will learn owning or being owned by a precious yorkie..is that you can't prepare for EVERY situation that could come up.....lol ones you never expect sometimes happen... The best thing to do to prepare is: 1. Educate yourself on food, toys, treats, clothes, harness vs collar... 2. Puppy proof you home.. 3. Get all necessary items before your baby arrives... 4. Be prepared and ready that it can and most likely will take quite awhile to potty train your yorkie. 5. Find a reputable breeder to purchase your baby...and... 6.. Just love that baby!!! You will get back way more than you put into that relationship!! Looks like you are on your way to being a great "mommy"!!! Congrats you must share pics when you get your baby.. |
Just wanted to say, Welcome to YT! This is a great place to be and learn. Can't wait to hear you "big" news! |
